There once was a plan for the NBN in my area, but when the current government came to power it was changed and now we don't know when it will happen. My work got fed up waiting and shelled out about $10 k for its own connection from the nearby rail station. How can you run a school nowdays without a good internet connection? Apparently train stations have the NBN.
When we lived in Thailand a decade ago we had better Internet than here, yet this is supposed to be a developed country. What a joke.

I've got NBN here, although, at times you wouldn't think it.
It seems to slow down in the evenings around the time people are netflixing.

We have had an NBN fixed Wi-Fi tower sitting 1k from our house for about 12 months now but it is still not up & running.
Still testing it apparently?
We have bought each of the 5 kids a Tablet for Chrissy, it would be very nice to have the NBN but instead we will have to allocate internet time to each kid because our current 4G internet will only allow 5 connections at once & we already run 3 devices off it.
We decided the Tablets would be a good idea because in June we were told the tower would be going by October.
Right, I believe you, what ever!

I think they are telling you porkies Andy. Ours has not suffered any outage. Or are you talking about a satellite connection?

Yes, but not as good as I would have liked.
We did get screen protectors etc free.

I am in East fremantle and not even listed yet on the rollout. Have to say I was just in NZ past week and it is disappointing to see how far we lag behind our kiwi friend. And before anyone says how small their country is I have to challenge have they had our boom times.

We sold our old house that had fibre to the home, and connected up the road at our rental while we build. The rental also has fibre to the home which is brilliant with my 3 oldest kids, wife and myself all using the net with virtually no lag, unlike adsl which would freeze up if 2 where using a heavy site. Now my game can update a map change at 5-10 Mbps while my daughter is on Skype/watching YouTube, my oldest son on mine craft, younger son same and my wife bouncing around net.
My worry is the new house we're building has nbn in the estate, but if it's only to the node it may not handle our future needs, with 7 in the house the downloads are only going up.:D

I wonder how hard to privately extend from node to house?

Depends how far away the node is. Even to run the fibre from the street to our hose was a big job. 2 man crew. They said they had a target of 2 houses per day per crew, but often didn't meet that as the conduit is so degraded.
I did see costs around $5k discussed somewhere.

Our fixed wi-fi NBN works well and so much better than satellite, with the tower only 6 kms away line of sight, but only from the top of the roof as it skims 1 metre above the crest of higher ground on one of my paddocks 1km from the house. Many closer people can't get the signal though due to hills.

We still don't seem to be on the schedule.
Have a look at the three year construction plan:
http://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbnco2/documents/three-year-construction-plan.pdf#page=1&zoom=auto,-243,451
Huntingdale seems to be scheduled for 2nd half 2017
East Fremantle, 1st half 2017
Of course this could all change.

We have NBN in Shepparton, go figure.
Personally, I reckon that it is a waste of money. I don't have it, I just have ADSL and it works fine for me, without having to spend 500 trillion of tax payers money

Agree same here, NBN wifi, the more people change over our ADSL2 just gets better.
Very reliable and cheap.

The NBN is great and long overdue. One of our places had a copper line that would drop out any time it rained. Both would only get around 1.2 mbps on a good day. Now both have 24 mbps (25 plan).

The NBN fixed Wi-Fi tower that is about 1k from our house has FINALY been fired up. They started building it in 2014.
When I discovered the tower is now working I phoned a well known Telco starting with T to see if we could sign up, we have been with them since forever.
They have offered me 1000gb of data, free local & STD calls, T***** TV & free install of something called an Air Box + all the NBN equipment.
Is this a good or reasonable deal?
Is 1000gb a month enough for 5 kids with tablets, an X-Box game, a Wii U game, our laptop, the TV, my/wives tablets & anything that may be added later?
We currently only have 128gb a month through a 4g Wi-Fi thing that costs a lot more than $99. We severally limit how much this is used, especially by the kids.
Thanks
Jonesfam
BTW Does anybody know of any good apps to keep the kids safe on their Android tablets once we have NBN because they will be less supervised than now.

We get 500 gig a month and have 2 televisions cranking Netflix and Stan every evening, all evening. It's just enough each month, and I mean just. 1000 gig will go a long way if you're not streaming TV 12 hours a day, it will be enough for any amount of your family surfing the net non stop, etc.
Streaming video is the big one - make sure your plan is upgradable if you start to run short, but I doubt it. Telstra give you 3 free top ups each year in case you run over anyway (they do with us anyway) - not that we have the NBN in our area or will be likely to in the next few years but looking at the sort of speeds everyone seems to be getting, I'm not missing out on much. I get a consistent 20MBPS download speed and the streaming video/YouTube never glitches or stops.
EDIT - says he, not quite that fast at the moment, but the test shown below was run wirelessly on my iPad while my Son is streaming Netflix in his room, so not bad. Might see what it is with the computer plugged into an Ethernet cable...

To get your head around the number, I'll put it into perspective. For 500 gig you need 1 x teenager who only watches streaming video, be it Netflix, YouTube or other and plays on line games on his PC when not watching telly. To this ad 2 x parents that have ditched Foxtel in favour of streaming TV - and you're done - 500 gig a month.
Now, for 1000 gig a month, you need some thing a bit more out there. Take 2 young adults who have just finished Uni. One of these is an IT grad who plays online when not at work and makes a few dollars out of it too (a wannabe pewdiepie) and his girlfriend (my Daughter) who sits next to him like a zombie watching streaming TV every spare minute. Ta da - nearly 1500 gig a month - I kid you not. And they complain about their unlimited download 50MBPS NBN fibre optic connection because 'it dropped out twice last month for a few minutes' - the younger generation have it tough...
