View Full Version : EGR do I really need to fix it?

It looks like the EGR is leaking from the side nearest the firewall. There was an intermittent very loud high pitched rattle around 1800 RPM which stopped after a short time and was replaced with an exhaust smell in the car. :(

There is some soot around the EGR so it looks like one of the valves is leaking.

Like most at this time of year we are on holiday. We are by Grafton, Northern NSW. The local Land Rover dealer in Coffs Harbour wants $1,700 to $2,500 depending on how many valves are leaking and can not look at it until Tuesday.

My questions are:
1. do I need to fix it, can I just blank it off like they do with TD5s?
2. are there any Land Rover enthusiasts near by that could help me out with a quick fix? Currently we are driving to the beach with the windows down so we do not gas the kids.

Try Mike Mills-Thom Motors in June Street Coffs as he has Land Rovers himself and does good work for a fair price.

Gullible - yes, you can blank off the EGR on a 2005-2006 model.

Good to know. I've left a message with Mills-Thorn. My main issue is that everyone is booked out due to the christmas shutdown. I think we will head to Coffs first thing Tuesday and see who can squeeze us in.

Well it looks like the EGR valves are OK and it is a leak from a $40 seal. 24 hrs to get the part and a couple of hour to replace it.

Regardless of the location of the leak, the scare was enough to convince me that I will be blanking off the EGR when we get home.
