It's that time.... -For all wheel bearings to have 'adjustment' and the rears have, AFAIK, never been serviced, certainly not whilst I've had it.
Did the fronts about 4~5 years ago, and am 51% sure I replaced them with new TIMKENs. Even bought TIMKEN brand grease, and used 2/3 tub. (only found it last night packed away in a storage box of 'non-car' stuff. - As you do...)

Require a bit of guidance required here;
Sarah/Car is used as a toy, weekend use & Sunday Driver, maybe more beach in future, anything BUT rugged off-road savagery. Fuel tank "leak" and squealing credit card... limits the mileage of serious highway travel....

Almost as much as the"wriggle" in her suspension joints, of which the rear WBs have been professionally accused...:eek:

Not interested -at any price - in cheap Chinese bearings, and Anglo-built TIMKENS seem to be pricey... Any thoughts about the better known Jap manufacturers such as NSK or NTN etc? - Assuming the rears need replacing.

For those who have 'converted' to oil-lubricated bearings... has TIME proved the value of it ? eg, longer life, quieter/smooother running, reduced rolling resistance, re-growth of your bald spot... - and absence of LR Blood-Loss ???

Or would I be no worse off by sticking with the current 'grease-filled/inner bearing seal' and therefore not needing to worry about Sarah being incontinent when parked?

Front bearings have now done 100K, the rears (guessing not changed) are around 220K

The Lady Sarah, (a.k.a. Event Horizon) '95 Vogue SE with working air suspension.

PS, I know I posted pics of The Greasing, but can't seem to find them or thread...

What price have you got? I didn't think they were that expensive... Timken's are about $50 a wheel, possibly even with a new seal and lock nut included. So $100 for both rears. Seems pretty good to me!

Hey Quag in my 1982 oil fed wheel bearing Range Rover I had over 525k on the clock with original bearings when I sold it, so that should give you some incentive to change them.

G'day Brad,
Did you do the 'conversion' - just omitting the inner bearing seal?
- or is there another oil-seal(s) down the inner end of the axle(s)

Remembering our farm tractors, all of them had oil-lubed roller bearings on the rear, with 'grease' only on the front wheels. (non-driven)

I converted the rears on mine just before I left Alice Springs (nearly 10 years ago). I would guess I have done 150 000km with the Rangie since then. Not a drop has leaked, no maintenance apart from the occasional diff oil change. Well worth it.
