Hey Brains-trust,
Planning in doing the sound proofing for the new 90 im getting and wanted to know how much dynamat would kit it out?
Probably will leave firewall as dont want to mess with that but everything else is fair game:twisted:.
Thanks

When I did mine, I think I bought two boxes of the following,
Dynamat 10455 | Extreme Bulk Pack | ($195.85)RYDA Car Audio (http://www.ryda.com.au/dynamat-10455-xtreme-bulk-pack)
I used it in the back, front, roof and doors.
I'm pretty sure it was only two boxes and I had some left over.
Maybe start with one first.

What was your result like? Is it worth the work?

It does reduce noise but i'm not sure by how much. I did mine over a period of time so didn't get the big change.
I think it made more difference doing the front.
I would do it all over again if given the chance.

Impressive work you did there, well done.
What thickness of closed cell foam would you recommend? Been having a look at fleabay but hard to choose which would be suitable. Can wrangle a bulk pack of Dyna for about $188 with postage it looks like

If your going to use the closed cell foam for the back cargo area then thickness wont really matter.
On the other hand, if you use it on the seat box it will matter.
After using one layer of Dynamat and one layer of 5mm mass loaded vinyl, the original factory rubber matting just fitted over it all.
The only closed cell foam used was behind the dash (on firewall). It was recovered from old packaging material I had kept from work.
Wether it was the Dynamat or mass loaded vinyl or both, the heat transmitted through the floor and around the transmission area is gone.

Are you planning to do the roof and under the bonnet?
Two boxes wont be enough if you are and I would suggest you strongly consider these if your going to do it.

Yeah just wasn't too confident with messing with the hood lining. Is it difficult to remove and then refit? Would kick myself if it had any sag afterwards.
Bonnet will be a definite

I think mine took about 3-4 boxes from memory but it was two years ago when I did it so can't remember.
Mine was a 2003 TD5 and I removed the hood and did the roof. It wasn't too bad you just have to dedicate a day to it so you get finished.
The company that makes dynamat also does a good under bonnet foam with foil that sticks very well under the bonnet.
I also used a product inside the car called Wavebar that is like a mass loaded vinyl.
I used the heaviest version.
Overall my car was a lot quieter.
I had a good sub and amp in my car and it didn't vibrate anywhere either.

How heavy is this dynamat?

It's very heavy, I had a quick look on there web site but can not find the weight .
If I did end up using 3 or 4 boxes ( I truely can't remember) then the weight would explain why my Defender is so slow! :D
I found the Dynamat roller very handy when applying the stuff. Even used the wooden end of the handle for corners etc.
AlecW- The roof lining was a real PITA, I'm not sure if the way I removed it was wrong or there is an easier method. I had to kind of bend/fold it for it to fit out of the back door (without damaging it).
While you have the roof lining off, apply some type of insulation in addition to the dynamat as that will make a difference with heat from the sun getting in the Defender.

I thought so, being tar based insulator and metal foil. I need to start keeping more of an eye on my vehicle weight :(

Yeah mine is coming with the sound system upgrade and sub so definitely worth the time. Just for interest sake I will do a decibel reading before and after to see what was achieved. Thanks

I looked into dynamatting and found people recommending roof flashing as a cheap option, so i picked a 5m roll up for about $60 and put it on a few panels.
Thought it was worth a shot seem it was made of the same stuff as the jaycar sound insulation that seems to get good reviews (Its called butyl i think and doesnt smell as much as tar based ones).
It has removed rattles in panels and some droning but if you want to remove road noise and engine noise it needs some other layers of insulation, like closed cell foam or mass loaded vinyl.
If the dynamat works on the same concept as the jaycar stuff (By just adding mass) you only need to cover 20% of each panel.
