Dubai seeks cause of massive hotel fire at New Year - BBC News (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-35209029)

It seems likely to me that this fire in Dubai was caused/exacerbated by the use of the same cladding that caused the fire in Melbourne.

I bet it is a wake up call to standards authorities in OZ.

I find it hard to believe that there is no criminal negligence remedy open to residents in Australia and they have to sue the builder, who will most likely claim bankruptcy and set up again as a true"Phoenix" corporation.

It would be nice to think that way but it seems when the big developers are involved some rules don't seem to apply.

I still can't get my head around how backward a lot of things are in the building industry here.. White styrofoam insulation is still available here.. That stuff is lethal and was outlawed in Europe years ago!! We are in the process of finalising stuff to go in our new Rivergum Home, along the lines of thickest insulation, European UPVC double glazed windows, thicker concrete pad, central heating, and a whole load of other mods to make it keep warm in winter, and cool in summer.. He said "Australia is not like England with its cold temps"!.. My reply was "no, its worse"! UK.. Temp range from -10deg to +30 deg.. 40 deg range.. South Australia.. -5deg to +48deg... 53 deg range! So, why oh why has the building industry not got their heads around decent building materials!!????

All you need is a weatherboard house with a big verandah.
If it's hot, open a window and put on a fan.
If it's cold, put on a cardie.

We usually lag behind European and American standards because our governments are too close to the big companies.

yeah, we shouldn't do anything that will negatively affect the building industry by introducing legislation or safety regulations to catch up with the rest of the civilised world.

However, good riddance to manufacturing.
