Hi
I am considering getting a second set of wheels so I can have a road set and an offroad set
Just wondering about 18"s for road travel. I hear about tramlining but is it really such a frequent issue?
Opinions sought !
Thanks
Steve

I had a set and I think I preferred the 16" (my 16" were for off-road). The 18" will go on the L322 to replace the 20".
If you were nearby, Steve, you could borrow the 18" and try them.

The 18's on mine tram line quite bad. Even with new bushes and rods under the front and trying different pressures it still tram lines. The old blue P38 with the 16's was an absolute pleasure to drive long distance by comparison - you're battling the wheel most of the time.
I'm hoping that a set of 32" tyres on the 18's sorts it somewhat. My theory is that the squarer sidewall/tread and lower profile tyres are the issue. Will see!

I've had no issues whatsoever with 18" rims, both with the standard 29.5" tyres and with AT 31.5".

Thanks for your kind offer !
Once you have had the L322 for a while perhaps you could post about the major differences, as an owner, from the P38

With 18's from a 2008 sport I had horrible tramlining. Changed from continental to general grabber at2 and have found them to be better than the 16s in everything I care about on road and off.
Apparently the individual treads on the at2 allow them to release so they don't tramline. Also steering is much lighter and tread life excellent. I currently have 3 p38s so'comparing is easy....

I have general grabber at2's on my 18's and they are the tram liners!
What pressures do you run?
My alignment is spot on, rods and bushes are new, steering dampener near new.

When I tried to sell the 18" wheels off my wrecked D2 the consensus was that good tyres were so much more expensive for them that it would be cheaper to buy a second hand set of 16" wheels and the tyres to match. The 18" wheels I had ended up at the scrap metal merchants for that exact reason.
Edit: some cheap tyres for 18" mags in SA if anyone's interested:

I have the 18" wheels on mine for bitumen, leaving the 16" for the mud tyres. The Toyo proxy's have been absolutely fine with respect to road manners. Perhaps a little more road noise than my previous Pirelli Scorpions, but otherwise great to drive.

I bought Hoges' P38 which had new 16's on it. Shame you aren't in Tasmania. I'd swap your 18's for the 16's. I just like the look of the car better with 18's.
I'm not that fussy about pressures. When I'm hauling a heavy load (people plus ball weight) I will check them and make sure they are near the maximum allowed on the sidewall. I don't always drop them back down afterwards. I don't drive far empty as I have another car for that. I'm usually towing something from 1.5t to 3t.
My main p38 drives exceptionally. I bought it from Hoges last year. It had new OEM shocks and all the other ball joint & steering damper stuff already done.

I agree, the 18's do look nice. If only they didn't tram line and there were more tyre choices out there!

Do the tram-lining 18" rims have the correct offset?

Yeah they are genuine rims.
Got genuine Landie 18" on my 2000 P38 looking to get some off road AT's on them from standard tyres myself. Since I don't have the luxury of two sets (yet) to play with we shall see what happens.:(

Shame you're about as far away from me as you could get! I'd sell you mine so I can upsize early ;-)
