View Full Version : L320 electric opening tailgate?

I notice on some of the UK parts sites that RRS electric tailgate struts (I assume for the upper gate?) and switch gear aren't particularly expensive.

I know it's a nice-to-have and something else to go wrong (especially with a flat battery!) but it's pretty much the one thing I miss from our Volvo XC70...

Were they an option in Australia, and would it be a difficult retro-fit if it's just an external strut (powered from where I don't know) and a closing switch?

I don't presume to know anything about the l320. But i can extrapolate from my few experiences with landrovers I would say it would be I big job - as if it's not built into the loom in the factory usually it's a world of pain & work arounds. (Strangely they have not modularised the loom as I would have expected in this digital age and a car with an electric tailgate will have a different loom without opportunity to easily add that missing option) (I would think I base loom that can "plug in" any of the options available would be z far more efficient way to design & build the car)

That's not always the case. For example the loom plugs for the fuel burning heater (European market) are in the standard wiring loom. These are the plugs that have blanking caps in front of the cranking battery box in our market.

So there would at least be a chance that the wiring is in place for an L320 electric tailgate. Stuart, do you have a diagnostic tool? Is it an option that's turned off in your CCF (giving hope that it could be activated)?

Not proof but this advert for a 2013 model claims it had "electric tailgate" in the description. It sold so there's no pictures.

If you plug "power tailgate" into Carsales they come up, particularly late HSE Luxury ones. Wiring aside they must at least have a different trim to accommodate the close button, and there'd be some CCF tinkering.

Hey Mate - How fair did you get with this?

About that far sadly. Might be worth digging deeper on the Range Rover UK forum than I did.

I have the electric tailgate on my 2013 HSE. But, these are all single tailgate, not the split tailgates of manual models. So there is a hardware change along with electrics. My bet is twin tailgate earlier models do not have any wiring for this as this was never an option. It only came in with last of the models, with single tailgate.

Good info, thanks.

Are you happy with the single gate or would you rather the split? I do like being able to "fill up" the cargo bay via the top half

I have owned RRS with twin tailgate in past, and like you liked the twin access. However, also like the electrics, and really with it haven't found I miss the twin much. Also seems better wrt to dust sealing.
