this should have happened years ago and we all could have moved on. but Essendon was in thrall to hird's cult of personality and the AFL thought it could sweep it under the rug

Any player who accumulates a total of at least 16 weeks of suspensions over the course of his career will be automatically deregistered from the AFL and barred from any further participation.

That relates to being reported by an umpire or the video review process.

AFAIK this issue does not relate to that law of the game.
