Hi All,

In order to pass a RWC I am confident that I will need to purchase new glass for my Series 2... The drivers side glass in particular is badly scratched - right in the line of sight. I'm guessing somebody used the windscreen wipers when the rubber was long past it..

I remember a thread a while back - stating that sourcing the glass locally is very expensive because most windscreen companies simply cut down a windscreen to fit - making sure that the toughened glass stamp/symbol/logo is in the bottom corned of the windscreen.. And in order to get the 2 pieces of glass required - they cut down 2 windscreens, and thus it's very expensive.

I also *thought* that Gromit had investigated getting glass imported from the UK, as it was much cheaper if bought in bulk...

Questions... Thoughts..

If sourcing glass locally is reasonably priced - can you please suggest who you have used in the past for this?

If it isn't reasonable - who have people sourced glass from in the UK?

And lastly - if I do end up buying glass from the UK, would people be interested in a bulk buy.

I am located in Melbourne (Collingwood - work, or Wandong - home)

Cheers,
The Grey Ghost

I reckon you should be able to get it done for less than $100 a side. I had one on the Inter done a year ago for $80.
They cut it out of flat sheet.
Whoever got theirs cut out of some larger windscreen was probably diddled.

I use a fellow in Ballarat.

Should be possible to find a glass supplier in a large rural town that is accustomed to cutting glass to size and certifying it for tractors, harvesters etc. and supply dimensions to them.

An alternative would be to get a second hand one - should be plenty about, although earlier ones are probably toughened not laminated, which I don't believe is approved today (but does this apply retrospectively?). Note that all Series 2/2a/3 windscreen glass sizes are the same, and L/R are the same. Might have to buy the whole windscreen assembly, as removing the glass is a bit fiddly.

One of the main reasons glass is expensive is the cost (insurance/packing) of shipping, although the small, flat, Series glasses ought to be cheaper than large, curved screens! But supply and demand apply.

Toughened glass can't be cut (it breaks), the glass has to be cut to size then toughened. Laminated can be cut.
Local cost is about $80 if, as John mentioned, you can find a company that cut glass for tractors, JCB's etc.

Paddocks are 20GBP plus freight.MTC5318 | Front Windscreen Glass - laminated - Paddock Spares (http://www.paddockspares.com/mtc5318-front-windscreen-glass-laminated.html)

I got 4 screens some time ago, arrived quite well packaged and survived the trip. Because of the weight I'm not sure how much saving there would be on a bulk buy.
