One of the design teams submitting proposals for Sydney's WesConnex Project want to funnel residents from Balmain, Rozelle and Lilyfield into toll road tunnels so they can get to the CBD and then turn the ANZAC Bridge and Western Distributor into parks.

I don't think there is any reason to take to the barricades yet. This proposal is one of 200, and is loosely based on New York's high line gardens, on a disused elevated railway line. The NSW State Gov. asked for bold & innovative ideas, Big mistake. The only sensible idea was to create beaches at Rozelle and Blackwattle Bays, just like Brisbanes' South Bank. Poor old, old, Sydney & Melbourne are being left behind, by progressive Brisbane.

The NSW State Gov. asked for bold & innovative ideas, Big mistake. The only sensible idea was to create beaches at Rozelle and Blackwattle Bays, just like Brisbanes' South Bank. Poor old, old, Sydney & Melbourne are being left behind, by progressive Brisbane.We don't need to create artificial beaches we've got Bondi and Manly a short bus or ferry ride from the CBD. ;)
While I like the idea of a beach at the end of Glebe Point and East Balmain, I'd fear about swimming in areas with over 100 years of heavy industrial use.
The contamination status of Sydney Harbour has been well characterized. Early work highlighted the extensive metal contamination in the sediment, while more contemporary analysis has also confirmed the presence of non-metallic contaminants such as organohaline pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These relatively recent findings have led to restrictions on commercial fishing, and strong recommendations to avoid consuming seafood west of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

What worries me is that pollies love the idea of toll roads, look what happened with the cross city tunnel, they modified many of the local streets so that you had to use the tunnel or go miles out of your way to travel a couple of streets away. The difference between this plan and the NY elevated green space was that NY had a disused train line to co-opt, while the ANZAC bridge is one of the two main egress routes from the CBD to the North-West of the Sydney Metro area and carries hundreds of thousands of cars. There are already many people who enter the CBD via the (free) ANZAC Bridge and exit via the (free) Western Distributor over the Harbour Bridge to avoid over $30/day in toll charges (Harbour Tunnel/Lane Cove Tunnel/M2)
It wouldn't surprise me that some eager Greens MLA jumps on the band wagon advocating for more green space and push bike tracks.

The point is, the relevant Minister has said it wont happen on his watch. The funnelling of traffic into toll roads was suggested by the owners of the roads, up here, but public outcry put an end to it. My Wife and I lived in the Manly area for some years after marriage, a couple in the Manly National building, just off the Corso, and some more in Balgowlah. A great part of the World. I take it you have not seen South Bank. Man made beaches have the water filtered and cleaned, much like a swimming pool. Water quality is first class.

The point is, the relevant Minister has said it wont happen on his watch. My Wife and I lived in the Manly area for some years after marriage, a couple in the Manly National building, just off the Corso, and some more in Balgowlah. A great part of the World. I take it you have not seen South Bank. Man made beaches have the water filtered and cleaned, much like a swimming pool. Water quality is first class.Pubic Pressure may work up there but down here, in the 16 months since they added one extra lane each way on the M5 the toll has risen three times. By more than the CPI each time and it's still a parking lot for most of the day.
