Anybody know if the old road is still trafficable from Bangalow to Chinderah, via Murwillumbah and Burringbah Ranges? It would be an excellent ride. If so, how do you get onto it?

It's been a couple of years since we drove it. Not sure how from the Nth, maybe just go to Murwillumbah and get on it from there. We went from Burringbar north.

That misses Burringbah Ra and Crabbes Ck. I can find it from either end but it seems to be missing a chunk through Tyagarah swamp.

Ian, if you get a chance, give the old Pacific Highway from Gosford over the old Hawkesbury bridge and up to Hornsby a try. It would be a great ride on a bike!!!:D:D

Think you're talking about route 40 known as the Tweed Valley Way. Its on maps and I've driven parts of it. If you get onto Google Maps it is there.

At first I thought you meant Tweed Valley way :D:) Tweed Valley Way is the northern end, about Yelgun it becomes Brunswick Valley Way, it changes its name again, to Old Pacific Highway at Brunswick Heads. On the southern edge of Brunswick it disappears, to reappear just north of Tyagarah airport, Gulgan Lane seems to link the two in a roundabout way.
The old highway between Ewingsdale and Titenbar is now called Hinterland Way.

I always thought that too, Jim and the Putty. I might have to come down next winter and get the spelling Ninja out.;)

AFAIR the old highway goes into Brunswick heads then rejoins the new highway a couple of ks south.
The new highway follows the old highway over mcleods Shute and then along the ridge and down into the swamp.
There are major major road works around Mcleods Shute at the moment with tunnels through being completed .
So the answer is that currently in that area the new road follows the old road but that will soon change.
You can get off to the old road at Moobal.

Take the exit at the BP, cross under the highway and turn onto the old road.

Moobal is on the old road, the new road bypasses it.
The new highway runs to the west of the old but east of Billinudgel. The pies are still good, by all accounts. ;)

I had a look at the map and the exit is a few ks south and the road is the Tweed valley way ( route 40)' and you turn north on it., and goes through crabbes creek.
Just lookup apple or google maps and you will get the idea.

Ian, the Putty road is very popular with the biking fraternity, it's quite a lengthy drive, the road is very curvy (a few people have been killed) but there is a cafe about half way along it that is also popular as a drop in place.:)

I think sometimes there are more police patrols on the Putty than there are riders.
A great ride though I've been totally frustrated by cops on the couple of times I've been on it.
If you creep up by about 5kmh , you seem to see one in your mirrors.

I used to regularly ride with friends from from Hornsby up the old pacific H'way to Newcastle,on my BMW.Once took 3 lanes to cross that bridge, after a night on "InnerCircle"rum,(186 US Proof) not the stuff you buy now, got it from the Seargent's mess at More Park Barracks, then I met my wife and became sorta normal.
cheers

Yes my son often alarms me by telling tales of 250kmh on his then GSXR 1000 on the Putty Rd and dodging a roo at that speed.
Ditto on the old Pacific.
My grandfather and father used to run a bus service from Tweed to Mullumbimby in the 1920s using Dodge service cars. It would have been hard going across the Burringbar gap back then. I haven't got a photo unfortunately but I do have a photo from him and his brother Vic on a Harley.
