I'm looking at getting myself a small laser etcher for a couple of projects, but I cant justify the cost of it for just the few bits I need it for.
how many people would be interested in getting things like custom card stencils cut for things like tyre pressure, vehicle names or etched plastics for instruction plates or service histories, oils or other things done?
If I go ahead and get one and I do stuff for you I'd only be looking at material costs + postage rounded to cover the costs of operating the thing and its deck size would likely be in the A4 page size range.

Any pics you can point us to of the sort of work this machine or machines can potentially do?

sure thing.
this is how manila card stencils would come out (for doing tyre pressures, vehicle names, tac plates) and the light plastic flexi sheet comes out as pictured.

this is how the engraving plastics come out

this is how plastic with the engraving pastes can come out

wood comes out like this

While I'm only going to be starting out with card and plastics (thats what I need it for) someones going to ask about proper metal data plate like the ones in the vehicles.
heres how they come out. BUT I wont even be considering that until I get done what I need to do with it and then I'll be working though that stuff.
some metals can be painted and then the paint etched to give a look that looks like a traditional silk screened data plate I've managed to make it work a couple of times but ATM its hit and miss, same same for anodised aluminium

(this one is a silk screen with just the filled in boxes ectched using etching paste, works very well on ally plate this I should be able to do)
this is how some ally anodised plated stuff come out. (plated copper comes out fantastic if I get it right)

This is how the laser etch paint prepped metal tags come out (these I can do but the prepared sheets cost)

They all look great. I don't need anything at the moment but in the future I might need some Series III toggle switch labels (if you know what I mean). I was thinking of getting them on eBay from overseas but I'd rather support local. I'd probably find other stuff I'd want done too.

Your poll only allowed one response - I am interested in a couple of them!

Have you got any links to the machines that do this stuff?
What sort of money are they?

I
Just vote for one or the other. Im not after exact specifics just enough info to justify getting the use out of a cheap one
Id figured pricing being a round up on the price of material and postage, same as i did for the first diggers stickers run. So id maybe be making $1-2 per item/batch.
Best guess was id need to produce about 150 batches to make the difference between me paying for what i want and buying the cutter and diy.

OK, that sounds pretty reasonable Dave. I'll just vote for one then.
