Hi All
I am looking to get back into a 130 Defender. We run a slide on camper. Tour the Outback. High Country etc. Presently driving a GU Patrol (Coil Cab).

I am only considering the Puma models - but my question is 2.4 or 2.2?

How are the 2.4s holding up to higher kays? they much of a muchness.

I am aware of some inherent issues with the PUMA.

All advice greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Michael

We don't have a puma, but our slide on camper is for sale to suit a 130 Td5. Same footprint. But A moderator has deleted the thread:mad: If you want info please PM us.

Hello Mike, my 2008 2.4 130 ticked over 220,000km last week. The transfer case is currently leaking from the intermediate shaft O-rings and is coming out today for repair, will be getting a full overhaul whilst it is out. This will be by far the biggest repair on the 130 thus far. Had the same issue on my old Rangie years ago- same transfer case so not surprising.
It has been a very reliable vehicle and has done many outback and high-country trips as well as my daily 130km commute. I'm not sure what the issues are that you allude to? We've been very happy with this one.

Hi All
Thanks for replies so far. I have heard of some issues with gearboxes and transfer cases in the 2.4. I am aware there were a few Wnrty things that needed to be done (small items from memory??)

I guess l am just chasing some info on how people are finding the PUMA model as far as reliability goes now that there are some with a few kms on them.

l am presently driving a GU Patrol (single cab) but we need a dual cab. So its either a 79 Cruiser or a Defender.

Both have their pros and cons - like anything.

Thanks.

Tojo 79 dual cabs are ugly, grab a low km Defender 130 while you can!

I have a 130 2.4 with a Trayon slide on camper and have done some pretty extreme 4WDing. Check out the trip report from our last trip cross country across the Simpson

Had no problems with the PUMA. I have done some suspension modifications to make it ride better and would be happy to share any info I can on my unit if you likE.

G'day Mike I've got a 62km. 2.4 that am mostly happy with. I have done the intermediate shaft job & fitted grease nips so it can now be greased every service. it's REAL tidy but am thinking of off loading it, bit big for the lady of the house. PM me if you want more info. Ian

I have a 2008 2.4 puma imported into NZ from the UK with almost 100,000K's or 62,000 miles. Apart from general wear and tear I've not had any issues with her and she's my daily commute of 120Km and i love it.......:D:D

mine's a 2010 2.4 with 150K, BAS tune since 50K.
Transfer case is leaking from intermediate shaft seal at the moment.

LR replaced the factory non lubed intermediate shaft at 80K, not sure what I have now but the leak is minimal. Out of warranty it has been a good truck with only the reverse light sensor failing. In warranty it had something wrong with it from minor to major almost every visit. Good service, paying the shop bills, piece of hand made junk who knows.

Done most of the usual long haul trips at GVM, seems fine.
Suspension and rear diff upgrade are the biggest mods.

Im (painstakingly slowly) setting up my 2011 (2.4L) 130 for long range/remote touring. It's not done much work (hardly any compared to others on here) but it can take me, my wife, our 15 month old son, 2 beagles, and all our gear quite comfortably - and thats as is (I havent got around to designing my rear storage drawer system yet, and still have the standard landrover "canvas" canopy)
