Road felt through steering wheel

Hi Guys,

Having this annoying issue where it seems I can feel the road bumps through the steering wheel. The best way I can describe it is a "lumpy" feeling.

Wheel will sometimes get moved slightly left or right when going over some bumps or uneven surfaces kinda of like wheel tracking. Particularly if not holding it.

I had the lower control arms replaced a month ago and the front end has never been so tight since i bought the car (second owner) which is great but the "lumpy" feeling is still there in the steering wheel and drives me nuts.

Looking for advice on where to look first.

Have you experimented with tyre pressures????
Mine are a bit high at the moment since a heavily loaded trip towing a camper trailer.From memory 42 front 47 rear.I can certainly feel the road surface more.Will be reducing them before I use it again(just got back from Albany),will be going higher than the reccomended,sits much better on our crap country roads with the tyre pressures up.Just done another 800km with them at those pressures,I wont be dropping them much.

Yes check your tyre pressures, from memory landrover recommends quite low front tyre pressures for the front, (I think it might be about 34psi for 18s) I tend to run a bit higher than recommended (@40) on road and you can definitely tell the difference. Check the tyre placard and set to recommended if not already and then see what you think.

Hi Calis,
LCA bushes, original parts or after market Poly bushes? Poly bushes will always give a harsher ride and more "noise" through the steering. Other than that it may just be fitting new bushes has now given you the feeling back that was there originally nd you just became normalised to the change.

Hi Marty, Full LCA replacement with genuine parts.

Its really hard for me to know what it should feel like now. I need to drive my mates new D4 to see how his feels what what kind of feedback is coming through that steering wheel.

Tire pressures are at 35psi. 33psi is recommended on the door plate. I'll try 33 and see how that feels.

I do recall this issue wasnt in the front of my mind when I first bought the car but memory is a unreliable thing sometimes given enough time. :-)

What tyres are you running ? Are they LT rated ?

Plus - what size tyres? How many KM? (Are they worn out?)

I get a kind of "rough vibration " feeling through the steering wheel on our MY15 TDV6 when we take off, but I am pretty sure it is because of the condition of the tyres which will need replacing very soon. Don't feel a thing after about 20 kph.

I can't comment on the steering feedback but from the 6 years of experience I've had with 2 D4s and various tyres, you will prematurely wear your tyre edges at that pressure.


I run 40 all round now and pump the rear a little when loaded. No wear issues since then.

Interesting how we look for different things in our cars.

I personally dislike the 'dull' feel you get from most all PAS systems, I love the communication you get back from 'alive' steering.

Having said that, tramlining on a road vehicle is a PITA, and you can get that just from a particular tyre type, depending on construction, ahs to a lesser degree pressure, done tyres just follow road irregularities more than others.
A more common problem is too much toe out (or any tie out on a RWD)
This makes it almost impossible to keep a straight line on a RWD car, and while front and all wheel drives often need a small amount, too much will do the same thing.

Funnily enough I always set up race cars with varying degrees of toe out, to the point some were absolute bitches to keep in line on a straight, but when you are looking to maximise turn in and generate fast lap times, who cares, but on the highway the same setup is too tiring in about thirty seconds flat.
