Hi all, Very happy first time Landy owner of MY16 D4 TDV6 in Fuji White. Handsome vehicle, but the silver detailing/features are in serious need of some black action. In particular I'm considering:
1. DLT tints all round (Tint Professor says $450)
2. Genuine black full length roof rails ($1050 fitted from dealer)
3. Genuine details from paint and body shop (Black Front and Side Grilles, Door handles, Front and back Lettering and Badge, total $1000)
Don't want to fork out on black alloys - happy with standard 19" alloys.
Anyone have any experience, comments or recommendations, particularly in Melbourne, about pricing or best place to get these done?
Any horror stories or traps for young players? Anyone been tempted by imported aftermarket goodies from ebay, such as stick-on door handles for $50?
Does anyone else think the standard D4 cross-bars look too stubby and round for the big bad chunky D4?
What's the best way of offloading my current as-new full length silver rails?
Thanks all for reading this excited Newbie's first time post!

Hi Blair and welcome to the forum and the Permagrin club. :):)
The following link is a site in the UK that sells parts. They have a number of black parts that may suit your purpose including roof rails and include a video showing how to fit them. I was going to buy the roof rails from these people when I got my first Disco 2 years ago but the dealer gave me roof rails at cost, fitted, so I didn't bother. The exchange rate is basically double at the moment and of course there's postage but it may be worth a look. I think you could emulate a black pack with what they have.

I'll definitely give that one a look. I do like the "no VAT" deal we get from the UK!

Hey Blair, I pick mine up on Friday, so I'm a new to LR ownership as well.
I looked at the Black Pack but it wasn't great value, plus they commonly went UP to 20" wheels when I wanted to go down to 18s. :D
Just on tinting, I'm a strong advocate of tinting for a number of reasons and think it is probably the best value protection product you can put on your car. In Australia, I would almost say it's a must. Mine's Fuji White too and it's tinted and it looks ^%$%$ing amazing. Will post pictures Friday morning.
I think the tinting alone will make a difference. As for the roof rails, I think you could sell them and get a good chunk back. I haven't solved that problem yet but will probably go straight to a Rhino Rack platform. In black of course. :D
Enjoy the car! (and get it tinted ;) )

All true - I picked mine up on Monday, and still on cloud nine. Last few days at my current job and took it in to the carpark today and parked next to all the company Ford Territories. I really liked my Territory but it really doesn't compare to the D4. Workmates suitably green with envy;) 25cm higher than CEO's car in park next to me!!!
I reckon Fuji White is the pick for me - it's a really bright white compared to whites in other cars, and the D4 is just begging for some high contrast against the black components. Enjoy!!!

In case you miss the link in the wheel thread, JayBee75 has Plastidipped some of what you're considering (grills and badges) and posted photos:

I expect you could do the roof rails as well. This would save you quite a bit for other goodies.

Hi Martin, Reckon the best deal here is the 60 quid santorini black stick on handles. And maybe the lettering if you trust yourself to stick 'em on straight. The bigger stuff starts to be comparable to local prices. Defo still permagrin territory - am I a bad person if my car lifts my self esteem? Haha - thanks for your response Martin, happy Landy motoring.

BTW, I also don't like too big rims. I reckon for your basic 4WD 18" rims are nicely proportionate, but the D4 is so big that the standard 19" rims are just right in my book. Hope it all went well today - post a pic if you can to share the joy:)

Any comments on durability? Does this stand up to a car wash spray? And how would you go about removing?
Great videos - I recommend the one with the balloons;)

It's fine for washing. A auto car wash would not damage it. To remove it the easy way is with a high pressure washer.
For general 4wding and road use the Plastidip is fine. However for my serious 4wding I swap to my epoxy painted 18" rims.

It would have been better if our exchange rate hadn't dropped so much lately.

powerfulUK have heaps of great youtube vids to support their products and are pretty responsive via email with extra queries. I think re lettering in particular they might even have a template to use.
The videos are handy too just to see what kind of effort is required with the clips etc on various body parts - eg the front and side grills if you want to pull the off and give em a squirt of enamel.

Not convinced I could get the same finish as factory gloss bits with Plastidip, I did look into this, and was quoted about $1800 from dealer for all genuine replacement black pack bits, minus the wheels, roof rails and door handles. Note, factory mirror caps only come primed, so need painting anyway. All about the same pricing as same parts imported from Duckworth's UK, for example.
For me, I'm still undecided which way to go.

Plastidip is a low sheen finish, but there is a Plastidip Gloss overcoat if you prefer a shinier finish.
The beauty of the low sheen finish is that the wheels do not show brake dust.
If they where gloss they definitely would show it.
