AS promised here is some pics of 143901296; C104337; Most things seem to be there, although I'm not entirely up to speed with what should be there, Any pointers gratefully received. Very minimal rust it appears . I do intend to take it back to the original state in due course. So any help regarding correct unit signage and numbering would be great, I notice the air pressure notices for each tire are still readable, 17 front, 23 rear :)

very nice!
very original it seems..
there is a couple of nice shots on the remlr website showing a stock CR and there is very little, apart from the nato plug thru the back drivers side guard, that is different from a civilian unit.
enjoy!

Rare to see them still with the correct blackout lamp switch and even with the indicator switch on the RHS of the driver, although I suspect this may have been a retrofit.

Would it have originally had the 2.0l engine? If so I assume it was swapped in service.

JohnNo. Only the 1438 (or 1418/1428) prefix (MY1958) SII 88" had the 2 litre IOE engine.
All Australian 88" Command Recon were 1439 prefix (MY1959) or later which had the 2.28 Litre overhead valve engines.
(The confusion comes from the census plate which indicates the contract date in December 1958, however by that time all the Aussie built Land Rover vehicles were 1*39 prefix.)

It even still has the blackout light underneath! The wiring looks a bit worse for wear though after all these years. The motor still has the up swept exhaust as per the early. This vehicle has been in the 1 family for a long time. The person I got it off thinks his grandfather bought it direct from an auction in Bris sometime in the very early 1970's. Was used on the farm at Linville until they moved up here.
Like a brain fader I never thought to ask his grandfather while he was alive :( I have down some work on it for them over the years,,, engine welsh plugs, wheel bearings and seals, etc. Never really thought I would end up with it though. Its not running at the moment, the bloke said it just wouldn't start 1 morning so its just been sitting behind the shed. Made room for a lowlux!

Thank you for that. A lot of info there :) Enlightens the history no end. Been poking around it with the eye of an owner and fixer now, not just to fix what I was asked to fix :) The tailgate is cactus, been reversed into things a few times too many, its held together with timber bolted to it! Some rust in the door bottoms, fixable, some in the door tops, not sure about them yet, some rust in the rear cross member inside, fixable. some dents, but not bad. Looks as if they were running e10 fuel sometime :( the fuel stinks and has lots of water in the tank. Not a good plan. That maybe the reason for not starting, all the rubber in the system will be eaten!
