View Full Version : Getting over being Done OVER!

For the 3rd time in the past 7 days we have had the Roadhouse done over.

They have cut holes in our fence each time, breaking into our storage shed, spray painting our security cameras, work ute, roller doors & so on.

Fortunately they have not been into the store yet.

It is not even that they steal that much, a few drinks, ice creams & stuff, last night was only about $300 worth was taken but 3 staff have spent all day sorting out the mess. I will have to spend heaps upgrading our security, we have had to repair the fence (bodge job) & spend hours writing reports.

Myself & 2 other staff live in the Roadhouse compound, we have guests staying in our units, I have my 7 year old girl staying with me & the idiots that break in are high on paint sniffing - that is a worry.

Anyway wanted to have a bitch because this starting to stress me out, up & over!!

Just bloody over it.

Not good mate,..I feel for you.
What about a "good" Dog?

A dog would be a problem because of the guests staying in the compound.

When I ran the store here I always had a bloody great physco dog, usually a Rotty. But I would probably have problems if my dog ate a guest.

I removed the ULP from Aurukun and replaced it with OPAL. In the half hour it took to have a shower and cup of coffee in the compound, my truck was pelted with eggs, custard, flavoured milk and anything else the ferals could find.

Come highly recommended and very rarely fail as a deterrent

By "they" I assume they are blackfellers. and the powers that be, and bleeding hearts etc wonder why there are a disproportunate number locked up.
Do the crime , do the time.
Then if a whitefeller catches them and gives them a flogging, they are in the wrong.
Ah poor feller me.

Or pull the slug from a .38 special or .357 mag and drive the loaded cartridge through a thin bit of soap. Won't kill but hurts like hell when it hits - excellent on the posterior cheeks when they are running away from you.:rocket:

The Police have got back to me.
5 kids are in the Lock-up!
They have 2 more to round up yet. 3 of the kids are facing 26 charges each.
So a result of sorts, I know they will all be back on the streets by tomorrow.

As angry as it gets me I feel for the kids.
Parents don't care, no future to look towards, Elders have given up & the youth programs come & go.

SWMBO & I look after 5 kids from Doomadgee & we hope we are at least giving them a chance.
I bring 1 or 2 of our kids back with me each school holiday to visit with family & friends, I really shouldn't.
The habits they pick up in a couple of weeks! Not to mention that I drop them off with their parents but after the first day or 2 the parents don't want to see them any more, very tough on the kids.

Anyway, back to upgrading my security system.

Do you know how old they are? A pity you don't have a program like this up there.

Take them round the corner and give them a good flogging, if mum and dad haven't someone needs to.

I got plenty of clips over the ear as a kid.

Can you get them on some sort of community service order just to tidy up around the roadhouse?????.Treat them to a pie chips and coke each for lunch and they with think you are king. They may leave you alone in the future.

Bob, they have those sorts of things going on all the time here but, & it's the BIG but, there is nothing at the end of the training or course.
Still no job or what ever.

It's like the Communities Security issue (I'm not the only one getting done over), there are a dozen good blokes in town that have been put through a Security course & passed, have the certificates & all that. But there are no funds to employ them, insure them, get them a vehicle, or hire a supervisor. So the course was just a wast of time & money?
This is the case with most of the courses people do. I employ about 15 people, there are about 50 people in town with the qualifications etc to work here but the reality is I can only just afford to employ 15.
People could leave Doomadgee, get a job in the city, but there is a very strong connection to Land, Family & Tribe so most don't want to leave.
Then there is the reality that if they moved to the "Real World" even with the course & so on the prospects of getting a job aren't high, there is just to much competition.

Andrew
Been there, done that.
Maybe it even worked a little?
They covered the work ute in pink fluro paint, didn't touch my D3.
Although we are pretty strict with the kids when they come in to shop (no kids during school hours, no running, no shouting, so on) if they are a few cents short for an ice cream or something we just pay the difference out of a little "Slush Fund" we have, if the fund gets low I chuck a few bucks in to keep it going.
We also sponsor a lot of prizes & drinks for school, sports, trips & that sort of thing.

As far as flogging them goes............. Bloody tempting! But I would probably get speared or something.

I first came to Doomadgee in 1993 ( have had a couple of periods elsewhere since) and it is a hell of a better place than it was back then in most ways. SWMBO & I have been well accepted over the years but what the ultimate answers are to the on going social, justice, poverty, drinking, drug, education & health problems are I just don't know?
I have some ideas but people want short term fixes & there is no such thing, it's generational. It will take a lot of time & actual effort, not just money.

Anyway, I'll shut up now before I become all political.

BTW Doomadgee has only stocked Opal & Diesel fuel since 2003.

when I was in Broome and duty manager at the backpackers I had to deal with a gang of 10 aboriginal kids the were continuously borrowing the hire bikes. My solution was, one night I was too quick for them and they left their bikes there and decided to run. I caught up with them and told them if they wanted their bikes back they needed to come and talk to me. Of the ten, nine come back, Had a chat to them and as I had already told them I called the cops.
The coppers come and took them home (2 am). Three days later they come to get their bikes back. So I rung the coppers and had a chat with them. Had a talk to the kids and asked them if you would do a job for me, the job was to protect the hire bikes.
Never lost another bike and they would bring me random bikes that had been borrowed from elsewhere. Used to give them the odd can of coke and always had a bottle of water for them.
I never promised them any thing I personally couldn't do, treated them with respect and they in tern did the same. Had many a chat with them over the 12 months I worked there. These kids were between 5 and 14.
cheers

Jonesfam, what happened to the jobs promised by the various mining groups, in the area. The further from Brisbane, the harder it gets for people. I see the Gold coast want another highway , built alongside the current one. There are two Queenslands, one in the south, with all the millionares,& one in the north, with hard core Queenslanders trying to carry the weight. Time to split the State at Townsville, create jobs for these kids. Otherwise, there will be no answer.

Don't kid yourself. There's rich people up north too (I've lived both north & south). There would be value in splitting the state, but you've got to come down further, somewhere between Mackay & Rocky. Given how few people from Brisbane have been further north than Hervey Bay, I don't think they'd notice

As a bonus, State of Origin could then ditch NSW and be a real two state competition again. :D

Centaury Zinc has just closed up. They are keeping about 50 people on for rehabilitation of the site.
Even when it was running it had to employ people from all across the Gulf so after the build stage only about 20 people from here had permanent work there, Doomadgee has about 1500 people.
There has been a lot of exploration done for minerals & from the reports I've read there are masses of copper, zinc, lead, uranium & some silver all around our area. Problem is Australia already digs up plenty of the above.

The organization I work for was originally set up with Century Zinc money (we are a separate business within the trust) to develop Aboriginal business in the Gulf.
The Doomadgee Roadhouse is one of these. Although we employ locally the skill set for a local to manage the business is not here. There are people with the skills but there are 2 issues:
Those people are highly sought after so mainly have Government jobs on higher pay & a lot shorter hours.
Pressure from family/tribe to give never, never credit or just free goods away.
It has been tried & that is why I am now here. I can't go into detail but lets just say the Roadhouse had more than a few issues, some I'm still trying to sort out.
The other Aboriginal businesses that have been set up by the trust are all heavily managed by the trust, I assist with the management of 2 other business & whole manage another in addition to the Roadhouse.

We are trying to develop a tourist industry here but I just keep hitting brick walls.
We built 4 accommodation units 12 months ago, they have had 2 tourist stay! I have plenty of public servants & contractors stay (in fact we expanding this year because we are constantly booked out) but we built them to try to get tourist to stay, well that didn't work!
During the season we have 100's of tourist drive through or stop at the Roadhouse but they don't stay.
We are thinking about a caravan park but if 1 or 2 tourist get their cars or vans rolled or vandalised - word will get around.
I am starting a project to set up an Art Centre which I think will work well during the season. It will have to be next to the Roadhouse because if you have more than 2 cartons of mid strength beer in your car you can't go into town, we have an exemption.
I have tried (& I haven't given up yet) to get a fishing camp going up at the coast with local guides etc. I keep running into land issues & tribal elders thinking they will get huge money out of it. They don't like it when I give them projections that don't have any profit for 5 years.

So, yes, we are trying to get some things going, but sometimes you feel like that bloke who had to push the boulder up the mountain forever!

Qld is governed from Brisbane, almost all infrastructure expenditure is in the South East corner. That's where the votes are. I've lived North as well, the state of the " highway " north of Rocky says it all. A separate State is a pipe dream. What would make more sense is an amalgamation of the N.T. and North Qld, administered from Darwin. After all ,this is the Asian century, so they say. Darwin is the gateway to Asia. As for the indigenous problem, It's the same now as back in the late 70's, early 80's , when I had the opportunity to spend time at places like Yuendumu, Papunya, Docker River, in the NT. Taking people from their home land, and placing them together to live with different tribal groups, is a recipe for disaster.

The Government solution is, no government has one. They think by throwing money at the problem , somehow it might go away. You can not pay people sit down money, and expect their society to advance. I feel sorry for the people at the sharp end, like Jonesfam, because frustration must eventually take its toll. Do I have the answer? Of course not. Does it sadden me? My great grand mother was a full blood from Central Qld. You bet it does.

I have left Doomadgee twice!
I'm her again, must be something about the place?
The mayor reckons he's got my plot picked out at the cemetery!
SWMBO reckons she's going to bury me here!
