OK, so I've owned a Perentie GS all of 2 days now.

It's the first chance I've had to really go over it in detail since it's maiden drive home.

And of course I have the inevitable questions.

The vehicle I have is starting to look more and more like a collection of odd parts.

but anyway -here's a few photos with accompanying questions:
The images are rather large, so please be patient during the loading.

Windscreen/roof junction - should this rail be bent like this, it's the same uniform bend on both sides, doesn't look right to me:

Strange socket/wiring loom behind rear ds wheel:
What is this thing? some kind of battery charging/service socket?
doesn't really look stock to me.

Wipers? is this normal - or do I have the wrong wiper, or am I missing a control arm, the ds arm doesn't have this:

Front cv's/ball joints - should they have rubber boots? or is it a grease nipple with pressurized grease behind it?

Canvas - is very hard and sun faded with holes. I have ordered new canvas kit, but is this worth saving/repairing/selling?

The Wiper is off the 6x6.

Bin the canvas can't see anyone daft enough to buy it in that state.

Swivel/CV joints. No rubber boot. The spherical casing is oil filled (sometimes semi-liquid grease referred to as "one-shot"), and should not leak - there is a level plug on the front of each housing. Leaking seal, quite common, is due to lack of preload on swivel bush, wear on this, or damaged seal or sealing surface. (or all of above).

Your canvas looks to be beyond economical repair.

good thing I ordered new.

I may keep it in case of emergency - say if I tear the new stuff.

Also good new regarding the CV's

Anyone know what oil goes in there? (will ask my local shop about one-shot) I'm about to do a supply run and buy oils and filters and such, and hopefully bring it from the unknown back into the known.

Your swivels just take normal diff oil - same as the diff. If the seals aren't leaking, then just use oil. One shot is good when the seals start to leak a bit and you don't want to go to the effort of replacing them, or you have an older vehcile with wear or pitting on the balls from decades of use. From what I can see, your look fine.
Take the level plug out and see if anything comes out - if oil is dribbling out, it's full. If it isn't, just pump a bit in there - my guess is they won't need much and they are a very low maintenance item, don't stress those bits too much. :)

As a matter of course, I replace all fluids in any vehicle I buy just so I know where I'm at - including brake fluid, etc. that's an easy and cheap way to know everything has the right stuff in it at the correct levels.

Looks like a good rig - as mentioned, ditch the canvas, that's one of the worst I've seen, but apart from that you have a great vehicle there. :)

Factory oil is EP-90, the "one shot" was introduced after the Perenties were built, but is OK to use in earlier swivels. It is less liable to leak, but is very difficult to drain out, and also difficult to top up. It comes in plastic satchels with the right amount for a swivel, and you are unlikely to find it except at a Landrover specialist. The type of oil in the swivel is not very critical, the only reason for changing to the "one shot" is to reduce leakage; it does not provide better lubrication. (except that it avoids running dry by it all leaking out!)

You possibly won't get filters off the shelf at any of the usual outlets.
Isuzu have discontinued the filter so you need an aftermarket brand.
The filter numbers and makes are listed on this site on another link.
However I know a mate got one at a "Sprint" shop.

So just paid my membership - I can post again.

will compress the next lot of photos to save loading time - and will repost the one about the mystery harness.

The air filters I have found equivalents for - but are discontinued by ryco.

Rumor has it that my local bearing shop can get hold of after market compatibles, but yet to confirm this.

current air filter seems to be fine, but it's a matter of bring it in from the unknown state to the known state - I like to be gentle with vehicles and maintain them well.

Mystery harness:
No idea what this is for, my best guess - fuel lockout or service harness - maybe a light fitting for changing diff oil?

Wipers - I ordered a pair of 110 series wiper arms and blades - in the hope that they fit.

Electrical - are these banana-plug sockets a standard thing?
either way they had a 15a blade fuse holder attached, so I borrowed them for the above dash mods, and also for a digital volt meter during it's initial trip home, just in case I threw an alternator.:

Ball joints - thanks huys, I have 10L of 90 weight gear oil for ball joins and everything behind the gearbox - though I have a feeling I'll need a bit more.

I have 15w40 castrol for engine and gearbox - I understand oil viscosity in the perentie is a matter of contention...

I found aftermarket filters for:

Main engine oil:
Ryco Z155X

Engine oil Bypass:
Ryco Z333

Fuel Filter:
Ryco Z169A

I haven't fitted them yet - so speak up if you know something bad about ryco stuff - I've always used them on my little xtrail without issue.

Also - "liqui-moli" injector cleaner - good, bad, unneccesary, or indifferent?

3 Mechanics have all given me different advice - I'd like your opinion...


also finally - fuel sedimenter - I'd like to dismantle and clean this - any advice?

One known issue with some non-genuine oil filters is that the oil warning idiot light can light up for 1 or 2 seconds or more on start-up.

The mystery item out behind the diff is a convoy light to light the diff in tac /blackout/ ops.

The Isuzu in the Landy only has a single oil filter and Ryco do not make one to suit, nor do Isuzu, however Cummins/Fleetguard do (LF 3642).I went to my local R&E auto, and they provided me with a nippon brand Z419.
It fits but it 20mm shorter than the original.

I've since changed engine, gearbox and transfer oil. with 15W40 Castrol GTX
Also greased the uni joints.

Next on the list is ball joints and diff oil.

Rear seats have come out for roadworthy regs.

firewall grommets and been sealer, new wipers, cleaned all the grease and oil off everything.

no weeping plugs by the looks, and what looked like oil leaks, don't appear to be continuing to leak.

though I get a little off the handbrake drum - I'll be pulling off the felt washer in the flange nut after I get more oil for the transfer case, and replacing with some oil resistant RTV gasket goo.

Gear shifting adn takeoff is much much better after oil change.

radiator has had an impact it seems too, and one tube is bent - currently watching AFM auctions for a new one.

Just keeping this updated.

Put 90 weight gear oil in both diffs today.

Fixed a leaking rear drive flange at the same time.

Checked the ball joints - I appear to have semi-fluid "one shot" grease in them right up to the plugs.

I highly reccomend that anyone attempting this purchase a "drain plug socket set" from supercheap as well as a 3/8 square drive socket - or weld two 3/8 drive sockets back to back.

Only oil related task left is the felt washer/handbrake drum issue.
