The Diesel would be great for it's economy, but if you don't find yourself being annoyed at high fuel consumption like I get, the V8 petrol will be just as good.

I've driven the two petrol's and i'm considering the 4.0l over the v8 just because for the price difference between the two i can load the v6 up with accessories.

There is a HSE for sale in QLD which at the very least would be worth a test drive. Not too sure what peoples experiences are but 160 000km for a diesel is generally quite low, there's other on Carsales with 300 000km.

If QLD wasn't too far away for me i'd even be considering driving that one all the way back to Perth....

Welcome to the forum. It is a place of many minds and much wisdom.

Try having a look through these threads.

Like any vehicle, service history is gold, and the history of the transmission in either petrol or diesel vehicle is a major consideration.

Happy hunting - hopefully you'll soon have the usual Permagrin :D

Hey zedrover

As narranga has suggested read up on all those links - they have heaps of information.

Main things to check for on any engine type are general service history and transmission service before (or as close to) 100k km. Front lower control arms may need replacing anytime between 120k-200k km.

With the diesel the high pressure fuel pump can leak so check the recall had been done, and the oil pump casing can crack and cause a blown motor - all this stuff is in the above links and the d3 section of the forum.

Best advice is have it looked at by an independant land Rover specialist :)

Cheers

As others have suggested at that price point I would go the V8 if fuel use is not to be an issue.

The V8's seem to be less problematic.

If you budget was a bit higher, you could stretch to later year diesel where they seem to have ironed possible problems out

I have to agree, the 4.0 D3s are pretty good value.

Hi Zedrover,

I'm X 2 on the 4.0L Disco 3. I've had a couple of 2.7's and value for money I would pick the 4.0 every time. The incremental cost difference between petrol and diesel and the difference in economy I would have had to have kept the 4.0L for about 7 years to start losing out. No timing belt or plastic water outlet housing to worry about. If you feel like a bit of fun you can pick up a half decent 4.4 HSE for good money. Very nice vehicle.

Good luck with the search.

Cheers Marty.

I think the petrol vs diesel thing depends on your planned use. If your looking at doing lots of touring or towing then I'd go the diesel. If mainly city work and you have no real need to extended range then go the petrol. I choose the diesel because I often tow a camper trailer and I like to get out to remote areas.

In either case and as has been previously mentioned, transmission service is the other big ticket item that you should be looking at to make sure its been done at some point.

Wow, :eek2: alright! As an example, you can get a 2015 demo model for $79990 drive away.
2015 Land Rover Discovery 4 Series 4 L319 MY15 TDV6 Kaikoura Stone 8 Speed Sports Automatic Wagon - Austral Land Rover, Fortitude Valley (http://austral.landroverstock.com.au/view.php/all_stock/2015_Land_Rover_Discovery_4_Series_4_L319_MY15_TDV 6_Kaikoura_Stone_8_Speed_Sports_Automatic_Wagon/9982242/)

So perhaps $70k for a 2008 D3 is a little ambitious.

Bahaha thats hilarious.

"This car presents great value at $70 000"

That is pretty funny given the model is not unique and an identical car with normal km is under $20k.

However, there are plenty of other nearly as amusing price tags. They must be happily living in silence, watching the tumble weeds roll by.

Oh well, costs nothing to ask.

Hi Zedrover,

If I was buying a D3 with the kind of budget you have I would buy the newest and lowest mileage V8 HSE I could find. Fuel will be more but maintenance and service costs will be way less and chances are reliability will be much better.

Good luck in your search and if you get one don't forget to put some pics up of it.

thanks everybody for your thoughts .

Went into landrover and drove a D4 Tdv6 2013 90000 Klms on clock
Very almost bought it $48,000 so I have now upped my budget to 50,000
What should I do 6 speed trans or hold out for a 8 speed ?

I am hoping to get a Hse tdv6 3L around 80000-10000 Klms on the clock
Any thoughts on this would be great also?

It's a really good conundrum to be in Zedrover. I think you will be lucky to find a 8 speed HSE for that price, but if you can buy private who knows.

I'm more than happy with the six speed in our D4 but from what most say the 8 speed is a really good thing.

Main issue with the 6spd in day to day driving is the 'pregnant pause' at roundabouts, when its not quite sure what gear to be in, and then clunks into gear and takes off once it figures it all out. You can drive around it few ways, such as flick the gear lever over to sport when you approach the roundabout. The 8spd doesnt seem to have this problem and is (somehow) smoother.

If it was 8spd pov pack vs 6spd HSE id take the HSE (tho in truth i haven't driven an 8spd). The extra kit you get with the HSE outweighs the annoying pause of the 6spd in my opinion.

There's no pregnant pause at all if your D4 has a V8 ... ;)

The 8 speed ZF is noticeably smoother than the 6 speed ZF. However, the 6 speed is an excellent transmission and probably better than any other vehicle you've driven. Variations of the ZF 6 speed were fitted to Bentleys, BMWs, Audis right down to Fords.
