Just a reminder to those with an interest in Military Aviation that Spitfire Ace is on the ABC this Thursday.

The Spitfire is right up there with the Blackbird as the most beautiful aircraft to ever fly - would also consider adding the Concorde to the list too!

Can we add the "gooney bird" Dakota DC3 to the classic list as well?

It could go on classic list but not on a beautiful list.

A Navy Dakota was the first plane I ever went up in.

And what a fantastic show it was !!!

Not only covers the efforts of four young blokes to fly a Spitfire but also goes into the history of the aircraft and its importance and role in the war,as well as pilots reactions to it. Great :!:

The good news for those who missed it is it's a four part series with all the combat stuff still to come....

What I think would have been better is that the the guy who wins goes on to do the spitfire fighter training as planned but the guy who comes second goes and does Messersmidt (s) 109 fighter training and then both planes are fitted with laser guns and they have a real dog fight as the finale - best of three wins.

One of the greatest siights I have ever seen and heard - while mowing the lawn of my house when I lived for a short while in the UK, I could hear this loud noise over the lawnmower - looking up was a Lancaster, with 2 Spitfires and 2 Hurricanes flying in formation - something you don't see every day in Australia.

If anyone has last week's episode, our recorder taped ABC2 last week, not the main ABC channel so I missed it! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

I was at the Battle of Britain 65th anniversary airshow at Duxford Imperial War museum a couple of weeks back.

It was awesome.

At one stage we had 11 spitfires flying in formation , they took off in groups of 3 or 4.. it was awesome

I've got some video footage but it's not very good, and I'm still editing it. However you can see the photo's we took on my website at http://www.bloodvale.com/site/PhotoAlbum/B...10-09-2005.html (http://www.bloodvale.com/site/PhotoAlbum/BattleOfBritain65th-10-09-2005.html)

Man, those Merlin engines have a wonderful humm don't they? 8)

Yep.

I went to an airshow years ago (I think it may have been at Amberley or maybe Archerfield) but they had the usual warbirds like a Mustang etc.

Some bloke also brought along his custom-V-twin cruiser motorbike.
Kind of like a Harley except that the engine was a Merlin cut down to two cylinders !!! Talk about displacement :!: Sounded frightening :!: 8O

I was a kid in Highschool when 'Duck' built that monster......he then cut the last two cylinders off and built a second that he sold to another Rebel club member......awesome machine!
