There has been a number of threads of LPG conversions etc.

My 3.9 V8 S1 Disco has just covered 100,000km. Would like a TD5 but cannot afford one. I like my disco and want to keep it but it is getting too expensive to run. Options - can convert to second hand TD5 engine of unknown serviceability for about $4,500 - doing the work myself - no really cost effective. I am not interested in selling the disco and buying a 300 TDI.

Can convert to LPG but all up for what I want it is about $3500-$4000 so not really cost effective. There have been threads discussing buying kits and self installing and contracting out the bits that need certifying - seems much much cheaper - cheaper again seems to be scrounge bits and do yourself.

Noting I am in Canberra but happy to travel to Sydney or Melbourne - how can I get LPG into my car for as cheap as possible given:

1. No inside tanks - I want to replace the main petrol tank with either suba tanks or 2 smaller tanks.

2. Duel fuel - so I will need a rear guard petrol tank and will rig up either sill tanks or make one up to fit where the main huge muffler now fits.

3. The car must run OK and not like a dog that some 3.9s do on older LPG systems.

4. All up cost ideally less that $2000 but obviously the cheaper the better.

Is it possible. If not the Disco might have to go and I will continue to run my Hippo until I can afford a D3 TDv6 by blowing all my super.

Without fitting a tank inside there is no cheap option for fitting lpg to a Disco/ Rangie. the expensive component is the tanks as they are a specific size to fit between the chassis rails and therefore dont come up 2nd hand very othen. I f you find some jump on them as the rest of the bits are cheap - i just sold the engine bay components on ebay for $70.
for a petrol tank you need to either find a used pocket rear 1/4 tank or fit twin sills - the 1/4 tank is the easiest and cheapest way to go.

I have the twin tanks with the holder and fittings sitting in my shed, I may be persuaded to part with them for the right price as I don't care where the tanks go as the vehicle it will be going in will only be a toy and probably turn into a ute at some stage.

What are they worth new?

If the tanks are in date by a few years then $400 - $600- also depends on valve type, multi valve tanks cost about $450 to retest, ask me how i know ! forget new ones they are almost half of the conversion cost of 3-4k. I paid $400 for my twin tanks with cradle and lines and they were in date by 3 years.

What are the dimensions for the disco. I have a friend who is amazing at getting bits. He gave me the gas system I have lying around for a few favors. I can giv him the specs for your needs and he will either say yep got one and quote a price are give me a call in a couple of days with the cost to get it.

I'm sure all you need to do is trundle out to Revolve and it will be there all laid out for you.

And probably only $50

For the amount spent on converting to gas is it worth selling your Disco privately so you dont get scamed by the dealers then getting a TD5?????I dont know what yours is exactly worth,but say you got $12000 for it,add the $3500 to $4000 for your gas,yopu are looking at $15500 or so,I picked my TD5 Disco for $14990,which I hope was a good buy.I was talking to a mate the other week he was telling me that $15000 was a pretty normal price in auctions at the moment.
Maybe check Pickles and a few other major auctions out for prices on a TD5 you would like,then try and sell privately and buy on the cheap.

Gazza, I got a brand spankin' gas setup for my Rangie complete with twin undeneath tanks with a cradle, converter, mixer & gas rings, all lines, switches, fittings, etc for $1000 - from the Trading Post. My Dad got some second hand twin underneath tanks for his RR for $300 (stamped in '97), so there are a few bargains out there.

The cost of installation by a certified LPG installer is a big chunk out of the total cost, so I'm still trying to find out what can and can't be installed when it's a DIY job. Will post the answer as soon as I find out, unless someone else reading this already has accurate info they'd like to share...

Thanks for all the information - seems there are systems out there if I keep looking - guess I need to visit a few gas places to find out which ones fit an injected rover vs the older carby RRs and what other cars they are also fitted too.

I have been looking at TD5s - the cheapest I have been able to finds is $18k but it had about 400,000k on it - there is a white one in Canberra for $20K and has covered 145,000k but has had 3 owners in the last few years - maybe there is a reason. I think that in this high price petrol environment a 11 yo V8 disco is probably only worth $10k even if it is a one owner and has only covered 100,000k so for me a $10k change over is not realistic at the moment.

I know he's in Vic but in NSW your not allowed to.

My Dad asked the gas mob that did his conversion and they said they wouldn't go near anything I'd installed myself. I'm not sure if that's because it's not allowed or he wanted to make some money out of me. He told my Dad it was $1000 to install it. They did a poor job on my Dad's car so I'm not trusting them with mine.

The name of one of these phantom certifiers would be good...
