Got home from shopping today to find a message on the phone saying it was the ATO and that I was in a lot of trouble and that an arrest warrant would be made if I did not ring a certain No Yadi Yadi Yada .

2 hrs latter another call with the same jerk on the phone , long story short I gave the phone too my grand kid by and the sound of it I don't think the ATO dick head will bother ringing back again any time soon .

Ah, yes. A well known scam.
I see you passed it on to the proper authority.

I have heard of this before. My friend got a msg on her mobile she rang the ATO and was told it was a scam. The ATO said they would never ring you.

1. Agree to meet and pay the fine in cash.

2. Meet said scammer.

3. Take shovel from back of Landy and smack scammer repeatedly in the face.

4. Profit.

I had one of these calls a few days ago on my landline, Calling number ID . indicated it came from Sydney area. Sounded like a recorded message. Included telling me to ring a similar number with 9 on the end instead of 0. I instead rang Scamwatch and reported it. Reckoned they should check out whose numbers they are. However, answer was that they do not have enforcement powers. Also that calls originating from overseas can be made to look as if they were made from within Australia. I find that plausible because occasionally on ringing a number to check on call I was not around to answer, received recorded message to the effect that the number is not connected.

Ask the scammer if he is ringing from Mumbai, as they have a very strong Indian accent

That scam has been well publicised lately. As mentioned the ATO never rings/texts you, they always send letters.

If you pick up the phone and there is a significant pause, that is the call switching from the random dialing machine or whatever they call it to a line to an actual person. Hang up.

Chat away is nicer for the rest of us. I here there is a app ( software tool) for phones which chats away randomly keeping the scammers on the phone as long as possible

Agreed, I don't want to talk to them......no patience for these types of calls.

You can just put the phone down and walk away. See how long they wait.

Maybe, with Australia Post deliberately (?) slowing down letter delivery times (to encourage their 'new' service of Priority Paid...) to nearly double... the ATO fears you may grow old, spend and enjoy your ill-gotten gains before they can steal it back from you ! :wasntme:

Wonder how many suckers they get...?

A modern day paying scam from that old chestnut, supposedly sent to various important People... or your friends. : "All is discovered, - flee at once!"
