View Full Version : Which is better Off Road a D3/4 or a mountain goat?... 'Percival'

Ok this is not meant to create friction between the flat earthers in the Disco section and the Latte set who are currently occupying the other disco vs defender thread, so, believe it or not I am asking a serious question.

The disco 4 is a capable offroader, but at it's current prices, I've been considering getting a mountain goat. I'll probably name him Percival.
Mountain goats are incredibly capable standard, without the need for bigger mud-terrain hooves or fancy electronic hacks to trick it into being in a preferred ride height. Their traction control systems are incredibly advanced, with their rock crawling mode second to none. Power is down relative to other models in the same class (mammalia), but this is well balanced with it's proven offroad performance. Due to the kind of terrain mountain goats frequent, their water milage is pretty good too!
Furthermore, your base model mountain goat can be purchased relatively cheap from a breeder, or obtained as a grey import, if you have the right connections (and can evade customs long enough).

Please help me with this most pressing of questions- Disco 4 or my very own mountain goat?

I think the Mountain Goat also carries its own poo as standard.

I have actually seen a goat blown off its feet and tumble down a hillside - I haven't yet seen this happen to a D4.

How does Percival go with soft sand?

How often does a goat need to be serviced and....will you be servicing it yourself????

Given that Toxic Avenger is a young Tamworth boy from the bush and has plenty of experience in these matters I have no doubt he will be the one enthusiastically servicing the goat. ... :whistling::whistling:

Look on the bright side Toxic, with a goat you won't need the services of a Pajero as much. ...

And a very apt name you have chosen by the way my young friend, given some of your comments lately it's really not that hard to imagine you wondering around the hills out in the back blocks playing with your Percy. ... ;)

Ownership is essentially the same except for the D4 you will own little fine leather gloves and with the goat you will own a pack of elblow length latex gloves. Otherwise its same same.

Cheers

PS. The Queen owns a goat and a D4, so that is compelling evidence about the analogy.

Don't forget an umbrella, or you'll get wet, from above even ;)

Id choose a D4. Tho I hear the ride quality and acceleration times of a mountain goat are at least better than a defender :p:D

Mountain Goats are being pressured out of the marketplace given the flood of asian Yaks.

Hi Terry, Grass and water were the only servicing costs I'd budgeted for. But if you have experience with any other services that a mountain goat may require, please add your experiences below. It would be great to hear some first hand knowledge on the matter. To preserve my warranty, I was more interested in taking up the dealer servicing offer throughout the 'new goat' warranty period. Why get one's hands dirty when the experts are willing to give it a go for you? I'm sure most of us would agree.

I think I'm sold by the leather appointed seat and shag-pile carpet. The music system leaves a little to be desired though (mainly some kind of new-age bleating)- I'm sure the Disco 4 would excel in this department.

As for performance on sand, I'm led to believe (on good authority, from a well-respected Saudi camel racer), that the cloven hoof performs exceptionally well in the soft sand. Being 4-legged drive with a wide hoof contact patch and a relatively low weight, the mountain goat comes from a strong offroad pedigree.

Will your goat pass Euro 5 emission standards?
At least the emissions are mostly biodegradable - methane excepted.

Unfortunately a majority of the D4 owners will never consider a mountain goat as the best STD(honestly that means standard!) glitch free models are all Australian sourced and almost 1/2 the price of an imported G4 ;)
The imported models that D4, or future G4 owners would prefer are highly restricted with a long wait time from order to delivery and come with no warranty as they could collapse from poor Quality Control in their port of origin. There is also a rumor most have a computer virus.
Although they do have free heated seats, unlike a defender, their payload is a fair bit reduced.
I have heard there are actual videos of night vision filming the servicing schedules of the G4's, a search of "U.S army catch afghans ..................(word not deleted by auto) goats" could illustrate this:wasntme:

I begun reading an interesting article (By a Kiwi!!!) here:
Carbon footprint of dairy goat milk production in New Zealand. - PubMed - NCBI (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25981064)

In brief,
1) Methane from enteric fermentation was a major emission source.
2) The use of supplementary feed was highly variable but an important contributor to the carbon footprint of the goats.
3) Nitrous oxide can contribute up to 18% of emissions (might have to block off the EGR, boys!) :o:o:o

Not interested in a Pajero...

I'd much rather a power stroke

And here was me thinking that a power stroke was one of the final steps in the routine for servicing the goat.:eek: :wasntme:

I'm not sure Percival can get into super extended mode, but I've heard a rumour he has very impressive hill decent control. ;)

I've heard that getting the centre diff lock engaged can be a little tricky, though.

The mountain goat advertising campaign would need to go something like this:

Why ride any old 4x4- step away from the herd and buy an offroad mountain goat truly capable of expressing your own free will. The kids will love it.

:p

Not sure, but I do like the sound of a dual horn.

I'm not sure Percival can get into super extended modeYou've obviously not seen a goat stand upright to feed on tree leaves but occasionally get hung-up doing so. D4s go into super extended mode after having got themselves hung-up.

If you get two goat's keep them separated, otherwise you will end up like a Series owner, with lots of projects started, none finished, annoying the neighbours. ;)
