Driving home and car loses all power and lots of smoke coming out the back. Checked everything, no leaks, not overheating, everything ok on tick over. Start off again, sounds ok, but no power, struggled up smallest hill, lots of smoke, blackish in colour.
Was still ok on flat, would coast ok slowly, but as soon as try and put foot down, nothing happening other than smoke. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, scared this could be major ?
Follow up: I had manifold skimmed and re-fitted last week, see photo, all around manifold is black, what does this mean ?

My guess is that a hose after the turbo has either collapsed internally or popped off.

Soot around the manifold means its leaking so gasket or loose nuts.

Knackered turbo ! Turbo not turning, played with screw driver and freed up. Subsequently took off blanking plate to check sensor from my EGT gauge and end of it missing.
I recall posting when fitting the gauge and was warned this could happen. marvellous. So annoyed as have been making regular visits to wait till the diesel autotecnica dual boost / gauge was on special as wanted to get rid of cheapo Chinese gauge. especially having just fixed the exhaust manifold. Looks like the decision now made for me.
Does this make sense what happens when turbo fails ?

yep thats very similar symptoms to a stalled/siezed turbo. the same symptom sets will present for
1. blocked exhaust
2. missing/blocked/torn/off intercooler hose, ruptured intercooler
3. turbo fouling (mechanical and gummed shaft)
4. mainfold joint failure
5. egr guts fell out (yep seen it but not on a td5)
however some of those will have additional symptoms such as whistling, soot, normal performance at low power.

Went for a test drive after freeing turbo and sure enough not turning when got back, same symptoms. As I have suffered a FOD, is that it now for the turbo. Can they be fixed in anyway ?

it depends on how it stalled out the turbo. if it fell in while the wheels were stationary you might be lucky and havent damaged the wheels and are just suffering from gummed bearings.
worst case you'll need a new cassette in the center or even a whole new center (depending on your local supply costs and DIY capability) plus the wheels and if you're very unlucky a turbine housing (or a compressor housing if its swallowed something from the front end you've missed)
by the time you get to replacing 3 of the 5 major components its typically cheaper to replace the whole turbo with an off the shelf unit. While you're replacing it you upgrade it.
on edit...
it might be worth checking that your bit of fod isnt in behind the wheel and the housing and unable to get out. if thats your root cause you might be very very lucky and get away with just stripping the turbine wheel and housing off, getting the FOD out and then reassembling.

Took the turbo off, still jammed, removed the cover, a noise and then the wheel moved freely, shook the turbo and there was a rattle. The attached fell out !

had a good look at everything and all seems ok, re-assembled and went for test drive. Gave it a push when warm and cannot detect any loss of performance or noises. Think I have got very lucky !!
Having changed all the turbo gaskets when took the manifold off a couple of weeks back, they all seem ok, or should I know change them again ?
thanks for your help Dave, fingers crossed this is a happy ending. Going to buy a better brand EGT gauge and stamp on that rubbish I bought !

changing gaskets when you have something apart is always cheap insurance that thats not going to leak there because you have a dodgy gasket.

Wow, scary!!! That's not even exposed tip sensor. Was it a cheapie?

Unless you are a cat you've used up your luck. I wouldn't waste money on a lotto ticket.

Looking at the before and after, it is the end tip which somehow has come out. Looking to replace with the Autotecnica dual EGT temp and boost gauge, circa AUD 145, does anyone have any experience on these ?
Learned my lesson with narrow escape here !
