View Full Version : Help with Wolf style bonnet spare carrier...

Hi folks,

I am posting in the military section because to my (maybe ignorant) mind this looks like a military style wheel carrier.

I am hoping someone can help me with instructions on how to use the bonnet mounted spare carrier in the pics. All the bits came with my '98 130.

I have figured out the one fitting with the two pins - this bolts into one of the two posts and the pins go through the wheel stud holes. By itself this seems to hold the spare reasonably well but would not suffice on a corrugated road.

So this leaves me with the other bent bracket - the nut that is welded onto this is a much larger diameter than the bolt that goes in to the other post...maybe it is just there as a spacer... I'm not sure. I'm not even sure if it goes on 'bend up' or 'bend down'. The tips at the ends of the bends seem to be the right length to go between two wheel stud holes if that is of any use.

Also, what is the middle post for - has a hole in the top that looks like it could take a padlock or similar to secure the spare, but I can't see how that would work either.

Anyway, if any of you can solve this puzzle and put me out of my misery it would be much appreciated as I am hoping to use the bonnet mount to carry one of two spares for an upcoming trip.

Many thanks,

Jason.

You need the correct retainer ring. Have a look at one for sale here. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/GENUINE-LAND-ROVER-DEFENDER-BONNET-MOUNTED-SPARE-WHEEL-RETAINER-BRACKET-MUC2440-/161792079476)
