The above lot keep putting an adv. on my FB page telling people they can earn a huge "$30 an hour" driving ****heads, shysters and those that want to punch their heads in, while using their own vehicle.
I respond immediately and tell a few truths gained from many years experience being an owner driver here and in the UK.
Guess what? They remove it immediately. :o
I really can't understand why they don't want the truth to be known.....:D

I heard today that the drivers will be paid less than what they are getting now. Not sure when it starts.

I've used Uber a few times, works well for me. Quicker pickups, better service, nicer drivers all while being cheaper. I'm over Taxis.

I honestly can not imagine why or how they are allowed to operate when the rest of the industry is so tightly regulated. I'd want to neck them if I was still a cabby or a hire car driver.

Never used them either in NZ or back in the UK but heard a whole heap of bad stories about them.
And they are about as popular as a dose of the clap with the black cabbies in London, they are not happy at all with that company........:mad:
Biut i suppose that it depends on who you get to drive you to your desired destination...

They wouldn't have got a foot in the door if there wasn't a need for their services. Cabs just suck here - can't get one when needed, unreliable - I've missed planes because they 'forgot' about a booking, dirty, I could go on.
I used a local hire car bloke for quite some time but he's retired now. Uber fills that gap now, and I have had no issues.
Maybe the Taxi industry needs to learn a few things to get some customers back. A nice clean, good smelling vehicle that is available when needed would be a good start.
Until they can get that right, I don't care what happens to them.
I'm my industry, you give someone crap service, you go out of business. Cabbies have had it all their own way too long.

I have been late for appointments because of taxis forgetting about a pre-booking.
If I ever have to catch a plane - I am just too nervous to use a taxi, as they can be un-reliable.
I do think that it's unfair on the taxis though - who have to pay for a cab license (which years ago was worth quite a lot of money).
I have a friend (housewife) who is an Uber driver - she absolutely loves it, does it at nights and on weekends when hubby is home.. I'm not sure if she's worked out the maths yet on how much extra mileage she is putting on her car, servicing, tyres, etc...
I've yet to try Uber - but everybody that I know that has used it, loves it.
I'm going to go and sit back on my fence now.

I've got the My Taxi app on my phone. It hasn't failed me once, neither has the driver, and most of the time they're good for a yack.

$30/hr?
many years ago when I was a freelancing tradesman, I was offered something like $30-35 on the old PPS.
my financial advisor said then , don't do anything like that under about $65hr.....I never did , but it's a long time ago I worked for $30hr.
so they aren't making very much at all.

I was thinking the same about that $30 an hour business. Out of that you would have to pay tax, petrol and wear and tear on your car, registration and insurance, plus you don't know who you are picking up.
No thanks!!!!!!!:o

I haven't used Uber but I can understand why people use it but it's unfair to those who have had to buy a taxi licence.

Insurance. Is the private use insurance going to be voided if the insurer finds the car and driver are Uber operatives ? If so where is the coverage for the Uber client ?

$30 an hour...... I earn more than that to drive someone else's vehicle. :o
That rate would only be when there is a fare in the car. As an old cabby I can assure you, on average 50% occupancy would be good. That drops the rate back to $15 ph..

The licenced taxi industry has been very well protected for far too long. Drivers have had to pay high leasing costs and the owners haven't had to do anything except get the vehicle past the examiners once a year.
Control certain types of people who drove cabs was impossible despite all the regulations.
As an ex owner driver I had no concerns about decent competition as long as they didn't ply for hire on the streets. That was what my licence was for.
What I was querying in when I started this thread was the $30 an hour as being totally inadequate to cover all costs involved and still have money left over.
I've no doubt a lot of Uber drivers (bloke up the road keeps his car in immaculate condition) give a good service but then so do a lot of taxi drivers.
I can see a massive turn over in people trying to make money on the side then disappearing in disappointment and I can also see some really nasty types getting involved as it'll be the only job they can get. Unaware people will be getting into cars with all sorts of potentially dangerous types. Drivers who would never have been given a licence to drive a taxi.
In Perth there are other companies also joining the fray as they scramble to get a part of the riches to be made. :D
