View Full Version : Windscreen Wiper Arm Replacement

I have just replaced the driver side windscreen wiper arm (not blade).
It is a reasonably straightforward job but I thought I'd put up a few details for future use anyway. I've only seen information on changing the blades.

Part Numbers:
Driver Side - LR038123 or DKB500040PMD
I ordered using the LR number but package had the DKB number on the sticker. No issues with fitting so I think they're interchangeable.
Passenger Side - LR038119 (I didn't change this one)

I needed to change the arm after it got slightly bent during a minor incident on the Cape last year. Refer post #20 here (last on page):
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/queensland-reports/224345-cape-york-outback-qld-2015-a-2.html (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/queensland-reports/224345-cape-york-outback-qld-2015-a-2.html)

It was still operational but made a loud knocking noise at the top of the blade's stroke.
This noise is more common in units where the spring tensioner has become weak but I thought a change might also cure the noise if caused by a slight misalignment of the arm.

You can see where the original arm is quite twisted when compared to the new one in this photo.

Sourced a genuine arm on eBay from the UK for $74 delivered (plenty available but watch the total cost when shipping is included).
LR038123 Authentic Land Rover Discovery 3 Discovery 4 OFF Side Wiper ARM NEW | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/252005572436?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)
Sourced an arm changing tool from SCA for $30 delivered (couldn't get in a store for some reason).

Be aware that it is not a good fit to the D4 wiper arm but still works.

This cap lifts straight off with a small screwdriver.

Note that the threaded rod of the tool is not centred on the mechanism shaft so I re-installed the nut loosely so that the tool had something to work against.

It was more difficult to release the blade cartridge than I expected. It required some force while holding down the little locking tab.

And the best part .... silent operation once all put back together.

Regards,
Scott

EDIT: just for reference, here is a useful thread on replacement wiper blades. Although some of the later post do lower the tone a little ....

Great info, wish I had found this previously! I was searching Bunnings yesterday to find a tool to do this removal and they had nothing really suitable. Good to see that a purpose built tool exists.

The Toledo Wiper Arm removal tool is available at VEK Tools (https://www.vektools.com.au/toledo-wiper-arm-removal-tool.html) who have shops at the following locations in Sydney. I'll be ringing them tomorrow to see if they have one at McGraths Hill.

3/50 Cumberland HWY, Smithfield
6/4 George Hunter Drive, Narellan
23/5B Curtis Rd,McGraths Hill
6/2 Ash Rd Prestons
92a Reserve Rd Artarmon

Slightly off topic ..... Sorry Scott....

I recently got quoted ~$275 for my front blades to be replaced......OMG!!!

I saw an American dude on you-tube change the blade assembly. A D3, but I assume it's the same on a D4. Looks a bit finicky but straight forward enough, though I image they will be pretty tight first time. So I'm going to give it a shot.

Anybody got ideas on where to get the blade assemblies? There are plenty online but I figured someone here would have experience and guidance on where to buy. I also noticed some non-genuine ones, wonder if they are any good?

Cheers.

Kev.

Kev, the thread I linked in the 1st post has good recommendations for blades.

Here's a link to the Bosch site. These have been recommended here before. I bought a set a couple of months ago and they are good so far. The hardest one to change is the rear window. The front ones are really quite easy when you understand what you're doing. Make sure you don't drop the arm onto the screen :o:o

Hey Scott,
Do you really need the tool to remove the arm? Can you use a trim tool to pry it off instead?

I buy the Bosch aerotwin blades from windscreen O'brien, they are cheaper than ebay,

Despite what their catalogue says, both drivers and passenger sides take the 530mm blades without touching each other, making for maximum cleaned area, and smooth silent windscreen wipers. I love em. Changing is dead easy, haven't changed the arms, no need to. They last about 6-8months, but I'd rather have a clear windscreen....

I had the Bosch and I found they didn’t clean the screen well, particularly on the drivers side.

Picked up a set from autobarn,Cant remember the brand, about $19 each and they went for ages.

I switched back to Bosch after trying Wipertech and not finding them good for me.

The responses are talking about replacing the wiper blades - however I think you are talking about removing the wiper arm not the blades (wiper arms do not need removing to replace the plates).

No special tools are needed to remove the wiper arm - just remove the retaining nut and very carefully pull on the wiper around the shaft - you need to pull it square or it can jam. But go carefully.

Removing wiper arms you needs the tool like the one from SCA that Scott is talking about, otherwise you cant pull it off square and you will damage the spline. Bit of a tight spot to lever up from underneath and you cant lever off the winsdcreen or the plastic shroud.

Replacing blades is even simpler, I think the bosch aeroblades are the best aftermarket ones to use.

Gee that’s not nice - I always thought it was nice that the people at SCA offer to change the wiper for you. Just don’t let the work experience kid do it. [emoji38]

I have taken off my blades about 10 times (mainly to "black" the scuttle panel and never used a tool. Had the windscreen replaced twice on my front lawn buy O'Briens and like me they just pull them off - no tool, no damage.

If you need a tool the arms must be corroded on.

That may work. Based on my experience I think the tool is worth using.

My passenger side wiper arm is FUBAR and have a replacement on order. It doesn’t move in unison with the driver side so I think the spline could be the issue.

By the way the Bosch blades are the way to go...

Sydney Tools has one of these up here in Brisbane where it’s just started to rain of course!

I’ll give it a go.
Thanks everyone.

Or if you don't, the arm is barely hanging on.....[tonguewink]

Only time I've removed the arms was when I removed the scuttle panel to apply Raptor coating to it. Came of easy enough, glad I had the tool for it

'''Severe storm trifecta''' heading for the east coast (https://apple.news/AFHCjZhsERCumoTliLXAj1w) I must drive the Disco tomorrow to work so I have loosened and removed the retaining nut completely and the driver’s side works now alone and the passenger side stays stowed.
Good news is the motor turns the bolt and so it is the arm. New arm arrives from JLR Friday.
Thanks guys for the help.

Surely that will just chew out any spline you have left on the passenger side - I would be pulling the passenger arm off completely.

Green Loctite and you won't even need a new arm
