View Full Version : oil leak from gearstick

So I removed the transmission tunnel today (noticed yesterday when I was under it that the insulation on the underside was just sitting on the gearbox, no longer sticking to the plastic tunnel, so I thought I'd pull it off and replace it seeing I have everything else out at the moment anyway)

and found that there is an oil leak where the gearstick goes into the top of the box. :(
It looks like there is a seal there that has pretty much disintegrated.
Any tips on what I should do?

Just buy a new neoprene seal for under the gearstick Chris.

Thanks Brian. Is there a part number at all? Any directions on how to remove/replace. I think I can see how it goes in (looks like you have to remove the 4 bolts holding the top plate on, but I'm not sure and really don't want to break anything.
Cheers

Part number is R622387. East to fit, just undo the 3 shouldered studs that hold the gearstick to the top of the box and remove the gearstick, lube the inside circumference of the new seal and push it over the ball (from the bottom) then bolt it back on. Hey presto, no more oil leaks for another 10 odd years and it also holds the gearstick a lot firmer.:)

I get my part numbers from here (http://www.retroanaconda.com/landrover/2010/02/land-rover-defender-110-parts-book/)
sometimes though It doesn't have the right one (like the gearstick seal)
and either I'm not reading it right or it doesn't have a listing for the window seal.

It there a better source so I don't have to spam the board continually?

Just a small note for the future if someone finds this thread
when searching for the part, search 622387 (leave off the R)
Buy this from Paddockspares.com. and not LRdirect
5.60 vs 29.63 pounds. LrDirect only sell them as a pack of 5.?????

quick report.

replacing this seal is well worth doing if you have a sloppy gearstick and find it hard to find the right gear.

It tightens everything up, removes the slop from the gear stick allowing much smoother engagement of the gear forks.
