Hello all,

I was thinking today about the resale value of my Defender. What got me thinking was I saw an FJ Toyota. Then behind it a few cars back was an old FJ40.
Now like it or not the old FJ40 was quite a popular vehicle in its day and I guess probably still is. But did it get more popular after they stopped making them?
Obviously Toyota thought it popular enough to produce a retro model.
So does it seem likely that our Defenders will become really desirable and maintain better resale or are they only going to be popular amongst us die hard few? Will it be likely that the new Defender will take off or will it go the way of the new FJ? I believe that production of the FJ has stopped due to poor sales in the US.
Having said that I'm in no hurry to sell mine though!

I reckon the current Defenders will go the same way as all the Series models. Parts will be harder to source and the new one will be just that bit better and as current Puma owners get into the new ones, they'll sell their Puma's to those who can't or won't buy or lease new cars. Like, how desirable is an old County next to the latest Defender, really? it's only the die hards who'll want them and the value will continue to slide. They may increase in value when they're 50 years old like old Kombi's and other old collectibles.

We won't ever need to worry about LR parts, your right about the county's,the roughest toughest LR ever yet you can buy them for scrap value, the Tdi's will always hold thier money, the Td5 will be the looser in my opinion. Pat

Thanks for the link Dervish- that sounds like good news for the likes of me. But I still stand my my original comment...
"...it's only the die hards who'll want them and the value will continue to slide. They may increase in value when they're 50 years old like old Kombi's and other old collectibles. " I guess we'll just have to wait and see and hope their value rises.

Only TDi units that are selling for Isuzu money are the dung heaps.

This is a good question , My td5 , has served me well , as did the County , So I was thinking of a replacement . I kept looking for quite a long time , in the end I bit the bullet and ordered a new one . My thought's to be honest were , What will the New Defender , replacement be like ? Will the new model be that much better than the last Defenders ? How will it impact on this models prices . Because of the time between the two Models I took a punt , and I'm very happy that I did . Like, how desirable is an old County next to the latest Defender, really? it's only the die hards who'll want them and the value will continue to slide.

The progression of the Defender over the last few decades has only really been iterative, so naturally a later model may be more desirable due to the improvements made to reliability and comfort, without changing the fundamental car underneath.

The new Defender - being a ground-up rebuild - will be a different beast entirely. People will love or loathe the car for a different set of reasons to the original, so desirability of the previous generation may not be impacted at all. At best, if the die-hards hate the new one, used values may go up.

Heck, look at air cooled 911s if you want proof that better isn't always more desirable. They were pretty awful cars, but they're icons and they'll forever be desirable for it. I see the Defender in the same light - I'll never part with mine :D
