Hi all .. I am about to buy a puller to remove the timing gear from the cam shaft .. any recommendations and also how do I know what bolt type to get to screw into the timing gear? https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/02/86.jpg

First just try one of the timing cover bolts to see if it screws in.
Fair chance it will.
Possibly SAE thread 5/16 UNF more than likely. Once you find one with the same thread take it to a fastener supplier (Konnect, Thomas Warburton, Blackwoods) buy a couple to do the job or just pack the ones you have with washers if they are too long.

Or: a three legged puller will work if you can get one to fit through the holes in the sprocket.

Cheers, Mick.

G'day All,
The bolt threads on the timing gear pulley to remove it are probably 3/8" UNC. However, I used 3/8" BSW bolts that I had in stock. I fabricated a puller to use these two bolt holes as there is not enough space behind the pulley for the jaws of a three leg puller. When you change components in the timing gear setup you will be pulling the Cam pulley off a few times to "Time the Cam". So a proper puller will save a lot of heartache.!!!!Also check the Cam thrust plate for wear and that the bolts are tight.
