View Full Version : Turbocharging a 1HZ

Is there a way to turbocharge a 1HZ without it ending in tears?
I'm not looking for a road burning weapon here. 130kW and 350Nm would be about nice.
I have a 300Tdi VNT automatic but I'd be aiming to build a turbo 1HZ that could at least out perform that.

Using toyota turbo pistons Graeme at Gturbo in WA is getting some serious torque and power out of them. I'll have to add a link to them. You will have to email him or ring, here is a lonk to the info,

Not sure I want to go the point of rebuilding with new pistons etc. Once that point is reached, getting close to cost of dropping in a HDFT.
Thanks JC might head over and have a chat to them.

From what i understand, and 100% the reason we stick to low boost and egt's with these when we turbo them, is due to the N/A pistons. The kits we sell are from Denco and are probably the best on the market for a direct bolt on with no engine mods and have a good long life. Have done a HZJ79 recently with 400k on it. Don't be greedy and you'll see some decent kms out of them. If you want to chat about it gimme a pm or call 0408995635.

If you need anything off them, drop me a line as I drive past GTurbo about 5 times a day.

Comes complete with a decent mandrel bent exhaust system too.

Na pistons will die fast, keep the boost low keep the EGTs lower,
if you try to push tdi levels of boost and egt you are going to kill it in very fast order.
IME working with others anything over 5psi of boost wants intercooling, if you;re going to set it up so it hangs off of the turbo and then fuel it to match you have to retard the injection timing a little to lower the peak cylinder pressure however this will lead to lacksidasical low end pickup.

Does the concern about turbo on NA pistons extend to turbo charging the NA 4BD1? Or was it blessed with the same pistons as the factory turbo engine? I have a 1H and the 4bd1 (and a 4bd1t) so interested in this thread.

The problem is more to do with Toyota NAs usually being IDI. The flame front is concentrated on one part of the piston crown and leads to cracking etc. Being DI the Isuzu largely avoids this problem.
Thanks for the ideas. Justin I'll give you a call - are afternoons a better time?

not so much.
there are tougher bits that go into the -T but you can stick 15psi + fueling to match onto the stock 4bd1 but you have to drive the pedal to the smoke as the pumps not configured correctly for that kind of work.
-t internals... you could push 30psi... and then you can go to the proper not messing around stuff like some nutter in yank land has done with something like 3 turbos and 60 psi.

Ive just refurbished my engine and after 750k it had 2 cracked pistons and 1 set of broken top rings in number 1. At 450k i turboed it and mistakenly thought it had alfin turbo pistons being a 1988 build. So i gave it 15psi and regularly saw 650 egts so i was surprised to see the NA pistons had lasted that long!!! The 4bd1 is in a different league to most other engines. 😎😎

I'm lead to believe they modeled it after Chuck Norris's heart.

Four months in with this car and I'm in two minds whether to turbo or not. I've put 285/75 Mickey Ts on it and that has blunted the performance a bit. It is just accelerating from a start I find it lacking as once underway it seems to have a good spread of torque at any speed/rpm. It is pulling flat 12L/100km too pretty consistently which is good as I expected worse.

I still have every intention of giving you a call Justin, just waiting until the tax return comes in before I get ideas:angel:. I've checked out a few of the kits and I have to agree, the Denco one looks to be the best engineered and the turbo itself has a good reputation.

Essentially you're buying God in engine form:D, any wrecks with an FTE are priced accordingly

Simon the fte engines are mostly sold via a waiting list I've discovered as they are becoming a very popular drop in to earlier models. I was even thinking about one for the 110 until i discovered how much they were asking for them even ones with 300k. They are a fantastic engine a bit boring in factory form but at huge outputs they can still see 500k life. They are hungry for injectors (120k on average) and must have new genuine ones including injector lines which adds up to some serious $$$.
