MY16 Puma with 1500k on it. In the last couple of days the clutch pedal has started to get harder as it gets warm. Trip to work in the morning its nice and light most of the way but starts getting harder after about half an hour. Freeway run yesterday and after an hour or so cruising in 6th its very stiff. A couple of pumps or quick changes and its ok again until its left for a while again. Always disengages fully and no problem changing gears, just feels odd.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Jon

After a drive home and a little more investigation, it appears that when the pedal goes hard the clutch is not fully disengaging. There's no fluid loss though.

Pulled the cover off the pedal box and checked the pedal position and travel which is ok. Only clearance I can't check is between the end of the pushrod and the piston which should be 1.5mm. The pushrod feels like its tight but I would have expected it to move around a bit with that sort of clearance. Hopefully that's what the problem is, but who knows.

My challenge now is to get the dealer to find and diagnose the problem.

Cheers,
Jon

I'm having similar symptoms with a 1999 td5 defender at present.

Its been in this state for 9 months or so ... when its hot and long runs, I sometimes have to pump repeatedly to get enough pedal back.

Mechanic couldn't diagnose. Nothing remote planned, so for now I'm just waiting for it to fail.

I'm carrying a spare clutch master around at all times. Frustrating.

Try removing the inspection plate and lubricating all the pivot points.
Also on my TD5 I had to remove the rubber dust cover and lubricate the back side of the piston and sleeve.
The pedal was a lot better then.
