View Full Version : Wiring access

I am fitting one of those small cigarette packet sizes radios
I want to get the wiring from the battery box under the passenger seat down under the car and back up through firewall on the drivers side .....down near the pedals................. I also need to get the antenna cable in there ....I have had a look down there and also from under the bonnet but cannot see any easy access holes.......

Before I start ripping stuff out ....can anyone suggest where I might start .....I just need a small hole to get said radio power wire and antenna coaxial through

Thanks a bunch

There is two oval shaped grommets on the firewall. The passenger side one is below the heater tap arrangement (the white valve looking thing).
There is a few spare nubs you can cut off to get wires thru back behind the dash.

(this is on a puma, your results may vary)

For the coax cable consider the gromet near the clutch master cylinder.
The is a wire from the clutch switch going through it to behind the dash.
From memory it also has the am/fm radio aerial cable through it.

For power consider piggy backing off the power out let(cigarette lighter).
This an accessory feed the radio will turn off when key removed.

It will be easier to do with the radio/switch panel removed to join the power and earth wires.
With the instrument cluster removed you can access the gromet (easier with a stiff pull wire).

As per above, from doing a Puma.

Ok thanks .......is this the oval grommets that you mean.....there is one either side ....passenger and driver ......those Stuckey out bits look like the cutoffs you refer to .........I want to hard wire the radio directly to the battery as it works .....even when the key is out ..........but could consider the cig lighter ...
......how do I get the radio switch panel out .....looks to have 2 nuts only .....black star nuts .....does the whole switch panel move out including the clock up top ...............bit nervous of going in there in case I have a disaster :

Undo the two star bolts and then you can prize the whole lot out. I think there are about four clips that hold it in, bit challenging at first but once you get the hang of it it is quite easy. The clips hold the unit on well and the radio will come out as well. While you are in there check that the wires that come over the back of the radio cradle are not rubbing on the radio case, as they did with mine causing much grief.

Clock comes out as part of the facia.
You could get power from the clock too.
PM sent if you want to ring to talk it over before you attack your pride and joy.

The pm floated up ....then dissappeared .....said some thing about cookies .....
.......I know less about cookies and baking and computers than I do about Landrovers ........yes I would like to discuss before I go hacking into my dashboard .........I have wired up the same radio in a discovery and it was fine once I got the wires through the fire wall ........

Ok I like that idea as the clock is always on .......therefore the UHF radio would also be always available ............but do I have to do any soldering .....this is something I shy away from .....never works for me I'm afraid .......

Are you in St Ives NSW or SA?
IF NSW, I'm more than happy to help you get connected.:)

St Ives NSW .....I know how to connect it all up as long as I can get the power wire and the antenna coaxial through the fire wall to the drivers footwell area ....as that is where I want to locate my radio ......I have installed same radio in a discovery and it worked a treat..........A hard to locate Gromit was the only challenge there once overcome rest was easy .................so how to get through the fire wall in a defender on the drivers side is the thing ...................

Hi , just to add to all the info you've had . I cut the little rubber tits off the fire wall grommets with a really sharp blade , then used a long piece of wire , I was surprised how easy I found it on both sides of the fire wall inside the cab . I just used tape to the wire and pulled then through , It was a lot easier than I was expecting !!.. Jim ..:)

Ok chaps ....with your great help I'm almost there ......got the coaxial antenna cable through to where I need it.....great ......have decided that it makes great sense to bring the power from the switch panel .....which I gently removed .....
So far so good .......I can see the clock connection ..... 3 wires ...red. Black and purple ......my radio only has red and black ......

Not sure how to connect to the clock .....looks to have a little black plug thing and a cable tie on it ........before I break anything ......do I just cut the cable tie and remove the clock "plug " ...............then how do I wire up to the clock ......

Hope I don't need to solder as its a bit tricky with the gear leaver holding me from pulling the switch box fully out ..........

I avoided all that and kept my power feeds inside the vehicle, running from under the passenger seat up to the cubby and along the transmission tunnel under the mats to several locations. Collected several wires and the UHF antenna together in one protective sheath. Saved a lot of mucking about.

Thanks ....tried to call but went to answer phone ..... Well on the way now ....can get the switch panel out and see the clock wires going in to the clock

.......so how do I connect to this ....I read in another tread that there are "protected female sockets " on the back of the clock .......not sure what these are ......there looks to be a cable tie on the connection ....but I have not disturbed any thing until I know what I'm doing ....I want to connect the red and black ( dual cable ) from my radio to a source of continuous power .....but not sure how to do the connection .....and before I start messing with the clock wires I need to know How I connect them back again with my radio wires .......so any guidance appreciated

Thanks mate ......you are a rock !
I now feel totally confident to do this

..........as we discussed ...I have had a few " professionals ' do work for me lately at big dollars and when I look at the quality of the work and the lazy options of drilling holes all over my truck that could have been avoided with a bit of thought and effort it really ****es me off .........so I'm happy to persevere here and do it my self and properly ......and if I stuff it up ..at least I know where the stuff up is and can go back and fix it

Thanks again

The clock connector is in two parts, the terminal block and the cover -

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/03/621.jpg . https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/03/621.jpg

The cable tie on the back of the cover is to hold the 3 x cables together where they exit from the back of the cover.

To dismantle the connector -

Cut the cable tie

Push the terminal block out of the cover, using a small screwdriver in the hole on the RH side of the cover.

Once the terminal block is released, use the small screwdriver to press down on the terminal's locking tab, which can now be accessed through the 'window' above each terminal cavity.

The permanent live wire on the clock is the Purple/Brown trace wire.

The clock's Purple/Brown wire is 0.5mm? - which is rated for 10A - it's fed from F30 (10A) in the dash fuse box.

F30 is the same fuse used for the permanent live on the factory installed radio head unit.

Does your vehicle not have the 2 x 8-way ISO connectors (Grey and Brown) for fitting a head unit?

OK, from the 2013 Model Year onwards, Land Rover changed the 2 x 8-way ISO connectors for a proprietary connector, that looks like this -

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/03/617.jpg

The permanent live is in this connector on a Purple/Brown trace wire.

If you don't want to cut or splice into the Purple/Brown wire, there's an adaptor harness that plugs into this connector, available from Autoleads as part number PC2-117-4 -

Wire ........and attach the radio black wire to some where that connects to the chassis ...........or is there a black wire on this connector that I could splice into too .........?

Yes, there's an earth in that connector, on a Black wire.

Hi There
any chance you could elaborate on the removal of the switch panel - need to remove mine to check out why my rear wiper not working from new - want to check the switch as I suspect its not connected. Have removed the 2 hex screws but stuck from there & don't want to damage my new panel.
Thanks in advance

Glen

The easiest way to remove it is with a soft plastic lever. Dont be tempted to use a screwdriver as you will leave marks in the fascia. I start at the bottom on each side with a pushbike tyre lever and lift the panel out working around the bottom. Once a couple of the clips are released you can get your fingers under the panel to remove it the rest of the way.

Tote

It's a basic post for a basic problem, but I wrote this quick 'n' dirty how to post on removing the centre panel here:
