Hi Guys,

I have an issue... I am rebuilding a 1954 86" and i'm stuck on the rear driveshafts. I have two rear axels. One with 10"brakes and one with 11"brakes. I am using the 10"brakes to suit originality. However, somebody has been using the 10"brake axel as 3 wheel drive, as both shafts are the shorter right hand side.

My question is, does anybody know anyone that can either help me by pressing out the 11" hub and swapping over to use the 10" brakes setup?

The alternative is, does anyone have a left hand (longer) drive shaft, complete with 10"backing plate and hub that they are willing to part with?

I am based in Sydney, and any help would be greatly appreciated....

Thanks, Andy

Hi Jim, thanks for the reply. Is the hub and everything attached? basically ready to be fitted? If so, how much would you be after with freight to Sydney?

Hi Andy

I'm a little confused about your 3 wheel drive comment?

Are, you suggesting that there is short half-shaft on both sides?

N.B. this would be an engineering nightmare as the inner end of the half-shaft is unsupported. (You would also have to permanently engage 4WD as there would be no drive to the wheels with two short half-shafts)

Yes you can press out the axles to replace backing plates, however you should be aware that the retaining collar is an interference fit and sometimes they are loose on an alternate half-shaft. So you may need to replace the collar too.

If you are going to all that trouble you would be wise to replace the wheel bearing at the same time. I don't have any spare long axles, but Brian Danielson, Land Vehicle Spares out at Silverdale would have them.

Take note of which side backing plate you have to fit on the long axle as there is no adjuster on the trailing shoe so you need to find a LH backing plate. (Adjuster at 10 O'clock looking at the backing plate)

Thats correct. I am using a different axel to this one, however there was no damage to the other, so I just assume is was fastened in so it could be moved at some stage (I hope).

I have contacted Brian and he was very hesitant to help, but would do if really needed...
