30k is a lot for an 18+ yo tdi but what are your chances of finding a good low k one when you are struggling to find one at all ?
I missed a few right at the beginning of my search with 220,000km on them, by I buggered about too long arranging checks etc as they where interstate. There seems to be two groups of 300 tdi out there, low ish km well looked after and buggered very high km ones, it is the latter that seems to be coming up for sale recently. When I started looking I knew there was really one ore or two a week that came up, but I was in no hurry to get what I wanted, but my F truck is rebelling, the list of stuff that needs attention is growing and the fuel tank has just sprang a leak just to add to my woes. The missus Nissan has very high km on it and it blows a lot of smoke and also has issues starting. She needs to do a lot of trips to Townsville in the next months due to meetings and arranging the Queens (shooting comp). She wont drive my Land Rover (thankfully as she is clumsy .com :wasntme:) so we need another reliable car quick. I was hoping by now to have found a good 130 for around 12k with the intention of redoing gearbox, transfer and over hauling engine and everything else slowly over the next couple of years, but hopefully the basic truck would be reliable enough to be used right away. I considered spending up to 20k if a resto had mostly been done with receipts, but 30k is really a lot of money, it would have to be a stunning car and I would still have to convince my missus which could be interesting..

Still I am rather uncomfortable spending 30k on a used car with 100,000 on it no matter how good it is. It might be even harder to convince my missus...
I would not mind speaking to this seller, but deep inside I would rather do up one myself using a good low km one, that way the spend is not all in one go.
Chris
It's a 20 year old car, you aren't likely to find a low km one, not given it's a commercial vehicle. I'm sure there is the odd one or two out there but being in the market when one comes on the market will just be the stars aligning.
I would also take anything that is on a TDI odometer with a grain of salt. They are known for failing, and are easily swapped when they do. It's not like a modern car where there is effort involved in arranging a mileage "haircut".
I could have my TDI showing 30,000kms if I want. It's on it's third speedo in the 5 years I've owned it, and when I went to the electronic one I chose to be good and have it set at the correct mileage. Choice was mine though.
Mileage is irrelevant IMO. It's what's been done to it and how it's been looked after that counts. I'd happily buy one with a million clicks on it if it was in good condition and there were receipts for recent rebuilds of the major items.

I am sure it is a great truck, but really for 30k I would have expected new paint and it to be minty. It does look an amazing example, but I would not part with 30k for it. I will give him a call and have a chat in a bit.

Hi Pat, I am looking for something like the first couple I missed that had 220 thousand kays on them, not 100k and they were around 12 grand, but I was too slow, I also missed two td5s so they are out there I just need to be quicker. A month ago there was a 12 grand 300 tdi new on Gumtree every week, but it has gone a bit quiet for a few weeks now. I am not against a high km 300tdi, but I am against paying top many unless it has been restored.

Ok It looks like I might have escaped the Mahindra, my missus wanted a Wrangler for herself, but she wanted to wait till the end of the year, the Mahindra was to be my car if I could not get a Defender 130 in time. She drove the Mahindra today and loves it, then she went to try a Jeep and although she said it was nice she actually preferred the Mahindra!!
Sooo she want the Mahindra as her car :D which I can use for the time being when I need and I can keep looking for what I want :D:D
That was a close call!!

Do they still smell like something died in them?
I had a new one for a week and it ponged inside. The Mahindra version of 'new car smell' needed a serious revision at the time.
A rugged bus that had it's charms but I'd have struggled to swap money for one. I'm sure they've improved in the last 7 years.

:D She is buying a demonstrator so it had time to err air a bit. I had read this so I asked and she said no pong :D.
Cant argue with the price though, even new zero kays is only 25k for the tub tray, if you shop around I saw a 2014 zero kay truck with an aluminium tray, and tow bar for 27k not bad with side steps and alloys as standard and Eaton diff lock. Is it a Defender, no, but I met someone the other day with 180,000km on his with no issues at all just normal servicing. He said him and his missus do some serious bush bashing so they must be up to the job. I sat in his and the seating position is soo similar to the Defender it is not funny (another good point).
Chris
Edit, yes the new ones are a lot different than the old ones, LOTS more power for a start.

My missus loves them so one will be coming soon, the one she was looking at has a small scrape with a very minor dent, I hate dents so I want to talk to the dealer in the morning, but if push comes to shove she can just get a new one and it will be in the next days whatever way we go new or used. She is not long home and she said the driving position is amazing so like a Defender, only the gears are easier no slop to contend with (I have not tried it yerther opinion). She tried the Jeep Wrangler after and she said (her words) it was dingy after the light open of the Mahindra, I am happy it is way cheaper!! :D
When it arrives it will get a good test on the farm as we have some very challenging tracks especially at the back where they are washed out.
It is not going to have the clearance of the Defender, but it is still not bad and it can be raised, and it has got diff lock too. The suspension is apparently hard for heavy loads, but the missus did not notice any issues on the road, but for my use it might be a bonus for carrying farm stuff. If wont be ideal for off road (stiff suspension), but those who want a softer suspension can get after market. Depreciation might be an issues, but not if you dont change your car often. How much is depreciation a problem, when you are paying so little anyway..
My only grumble is the paddles on the steering wheel fade and the plastic they are made of is rubbish otherwise apart it not being exactly a sexy design to look at it is hard to fault.
I will post again soon when she gets it and I try properly.

Back on topic if anyone has a project for 130 PLEASE let me know. I wanted a good 130 for sensible money, but either they are roooted or they are reso projects it seems. I am not willing to pay 25-30 for someone else's problems, I am better getting a project that has known issues and fix it up IMO then I know what has been done and how and how well. I dont mind paying 30k or more if needed for my 130, but not for a car I dont know then spend another 20k to get it right because I bought a lemon. New plan is a resto my shed is ready and waiting for a decent solid project. Missus can enjoy the Mahindra and it can do needed farm jobs while the beast is born :D

Hi everyone,
That 130 on Facebook for sale for $30,000 is mine.
I have removed some of the extreme suspension components and reduced the price to $26,000.
Thank you Damien for the heads up on this post.
Regards.
Michael.

Hi Chris. Would you settle for a ute or does it have to be a tray back?

Tray is better, but if it is the right price the tub can be changed later.

Ok. I'm going to start putting notes under wipers. You never know your luck in the big City.

Cheers Billy. I wont hold my breath though as it feels like anyone driving a Defender right now thinks it is worth a mint :(
If I dont get one soon I will put my old series in the shed and start rebuilding that just to be getting on with something.
Cheers

Chris, there's nothing more expensive than a cheap defender :D. Pat
Very nice, That has to be quote of the decade. All too true for me.... without the help I have had from Jboot I would be curled up in the fetal position rocking myself to sleep under a bridge in Brisbane somewhere cursing the day I bought a "cheap" defender.
I was very lucky to have that sort of help and happily because of that now have vague grasp of what to do when things go bang, which is priceless.

just saw a maroon pik-up with a bucket load of extras and a suspension and tyre upgrade, not to mention a matching fiberglass canopy and i have to say, it was a nice looking bit of kit
looked a lot like a merc from a distance... :wasntme:

Thanks everyone,
I am looking for a real solid project not too expensive, Basically when I start I will end up changing everything. I know myself I will end up making it a new truck so I want to spend as little as possible on the initial truck as most will be changed anyway.

I have not seen any go for 4k for sure not 500km away. One came up for 7k while I was away which has quite a lot of rust so I did not rush in. Now my car emergency is over I can afford to wait for the right one, hopefully a solid 300tdi needing a bit of tlc. Why didnt you let me know yours was for sale?

I did offer it to you months ago before I even had the tdci 130.
Emailed you photos even? Now I'm confused?
Anyway I didn't advertise but word got out and I sold in no time at all - obviously 300tdi dual cabs are sought after so me thinks you will have to be quick when one comes up.
Enjoy the search
