Hi All,

Driving home last night I spotted a nice D2 in traffic.. Being a Land Rover I had a quick look and noticed the number plate...

Sorry for the poor picture quality - it looked ok on my mobile!

What is the writing above the numbers? Is it Arabic? What does it say?

Just curious!

It's Japanese. And it says "bikutoria" or "Victoria" in Japanese English.

The characters are Katakana which are used to phonetically write non-Japanese words.

And that plate is not legal as its not a Vicroads issued plate.

There's quite a few of these plates around, are you sure they're not legal?

i am really surprised that they are legal, another revenue stream gone out the window.

Hm, seems like they are VR issued. Why on earth would you want plates with Japanese characters on it or other foreign themed plates, dont like the euro ones either.

I guess some people want Japanese size plates on a Japanese vehicle the same way people want to match plate sizes for European & American cars. Interestingly, Japanese number plates are a pretty similarly size to Australian ones.

As for why these ones are on a Disco - wakarimasen!

The drivers I've seen with these are Asian, so maybe it's a bit like the little flag stickers you see on cars their just probably a bit proud of where they are from ;)

Same reason some people want random Chinese sayings tattooed on their skin I guess.

They look mad on a JDM car. My sister has ordered a set for her new Skyline, but it is a proper JDM car that came through an importer.

Japanese Domestic Market. ;)

Common term for "grey" Japanese imports. My young bloke bought this one in through an importer in Sydney a while back - it's a model that was not available in Australia.

Is it really that important, in the scheme of things?

Mick_Marsh

Oh, yes. The numberplate you have on your car is very important.

I have Euro style plates on the Mercs. They look much better than the standard plates. Classic American cars look great with the American style plates. If I had a Jap performance vehicle, I'd put the Japanese style plates on it.

I don't recall anyone placing an importance level on it Bob. It is just a subject being discussed by members that are interested.

Very similar to the stuff in the WC, I would imagine.

Do you think this bloke pays an annual premium or did he just score a dead lucky standard issue?

Saw one just this morning. I thought it looked cool but have no idea what it said:D I wonder why only Japanese? We might need 6,500 more which is roughly the number of spoken languages in the world today.

I admit the Looney Tunes models might suite my Disco when fully loaded with my crew on board.

Do any of you other states have a roads authority with a better range as us mexicans? Can we have spanish please

Just reading the Silk Road- a new history of the world. What is most interesting is the exchange of information, integration of ideas, muddling /mixing of religion. Greek, persian, Chinese, Egyptian, Roman and even the barbarians all seems to have played a part in Maths, Science, Engineering, Culture and religions. Adaptation and adoption of better ideas from other cultures was common in all areas and did not stop 2000 years ago :D

There were no Patents in those days.

Patents are interesting and often only worried about in some countries.
I loved a White and Red fried chicken shop I visited in Taiwan- Bet KFC might not have liked the shop so much- Ok that might be trade marks.

Generic drugs are usually as good as the just out of patent versions.

Back on the plates- Many Aborigional words are used commonly in Australia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_words_of_Australian_Aboriginal_ori gin

Lay you money some of us live in places with Aboriginal names https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Australian_place_names_of_Aboriginal_origi n

Hope we can get some of these on our Vic Plates as well:D

I went to a submarine cable maintenance conference in Taipei and the delegates were warned to avoid premises with the spinning red/white striped barber poles.

As you were in the Navy, I suspect you got the same warnings.
