Yep, lots of people from Myanmar were made slaves in Thailand, particularly after Australia started turning boats back. That bloke is lucky to still be alive - many were raped, tortured or murdered, at sea or in the forests.
Incidentally the 10,000 baht he was promised for a year's work is about the monthly rent I used to pay so that shows how little it is worth.
