The main belt tensioner bearing is wailing like a banshee.

Does any one know the serial number of the replacement bearing?

I've replaced the auxilary belt equivalent before but this the first time for this one.

I bought the bearing from British 4wd.com, not sure of the original Part # but have a look at their site as it list the bearing etc, I ordered a belt and bearing from them great customer service and very prompt delivery

Hi One (or do you prefer 'Mr Iota'?),

My bearing is a NTN 6203 LU. If it's not yet stuffed, you can carefully prise off one of the seals with jewellers screwdrivers, grease the bearing and replace the seal.

Also bear in mind the belt itself can squeal. Ours gets upset when the weather turns humid. Try carefully applying a few puffs of talcum powder onto the inside of the belt while idling. If this immediately shuts it up, then it's the belt, not the tensioner bearing. (But the bearing probably wouldn't suffer from a bit of grease either.) Consensus seems to be that this squealing is caused by the tensioner wearing, tilting slightly and causing a slight belt misalignment. People report differing results from: new belts, belt conditioning sprays, new tensioners, etc.

Thanks Guys,

I've downloaded the catalogue from British 4wd and indeed the bearing 6203 is the beasty.

I went through the rigmarole of spraying belt grip and WD40 and it appears that the bearing is the culprit as it is rpm dependant. So a new bearing is added to the front u-joint on the list of things to do this coming weekend.

Warning: skinned knuckles, grease and cursing ahead :wink:

I will give B 4wd a go.

I just stuffed the bearings in my air con belt idler and all i dont was take the old one out walk down to a bearing supplier and they matched it up and charged me $4. it was perfect.
i'm not too sure where the matrix is but if its not far from campbelltown NSW go there

I've replaced the 6203 bearing before, and here are a few tips: tBe careful with the spring clips that hold the bearing in- they fly out when you prise them out with a screwdriver. You'll need some sort of pipe a similar size to the bearing to drift it in/out. After you extract the bearing from the housing, use emery paper to smooth the interior of the housing-makes it easier to get the new bearing in. When you are drifting (ie hammering) the new bearing in, be carefull not to damage the race of the bearing( Where the balls are) and support the housing as well. There are two types of bearing, ordinary ones rated at 12000rpm-sealed with blue or black plastic( $8- CBC) and heavy duty 18000rpm sealed metal sides( $16). Damaging the seal on either will stuff it. Buy two or three because the other idler pulleys have the same set up. Other than that, it's easy
