Inspired by a TV ad I went to Jaycar.
The tennis playing RR driving Autopro blonds were nice but the price for a similar reversing alarm unit at Jaycar was better.
As I enquired a gentleman was asking for a camera and a screen. It turned out that he was the bloke who parked his black D3 behind my tractor. 8O
I will install my reversing alarms shortly and will let you know with pictures

It has only taken 6 months but I finally got a round tuit 8O
http://www.jaycar.com.au/products_uploaded/productLarge_1312.jpg
$45 from Jaycar.

Sensors mounted on the endcaps

Control panel hidden in the rear section near the rear lights. Power taken from the reversing light feed and earthed.
"speaker" rear pillar:

1.5 hours work
It works very well with four pitches and pulses depending on distance from about 1.5 metres to continuous squeal at about 0.3 metres and deals with that enourmous blind spot caused by the driver's side rear pillar...you know the one that the trees sneek up in.

Just watch out for those bumper end capings as they're usually one of the first bits of trim to come off while out in the sticky stuff!
It'd also be interesting to know how those sensors cope with being dunked in mud & water on a regular basis?? I take it they're fairly well sealed to the elements?

Hi Mark,
Yes all of the above. They seem well sealed but at $45 I'll happily experiment. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Although I have never ripped the the end caps off in the forward direction only compressed them in reverse. Surprisingly tough buggers.

Just a small thing to mention, I need to put a switch in our setup on the disco as when we reverse the caravan, the beeping tends to drive you nuts !!!!

When I bought Rosemary she already had a reversing alarm fitted. The alarm drove me nut every time I put her in reverse so I switched it off. So far it's been nearly 2 years that I've been meaning to take a look at the system and see why it's going off all the time
The little alarm speaker is right at my right ear

I'd be interested to hear how they perform too. Having just the back door repaired a second time. Damn trees.
My local doof-doof supplier won't instal them if theres a chance they'll get submerged. And theirs don't work well with alumium, they don't know why. All sorts of troubles with utes & alloy trays.
So its got to be camera.

There seems to be a problem with fitting these ultrasonic detectors to metal. My D3 has these on the front and ARB state not to have them retrofitted from the plastic bumber to the ARB BB. ARB couldn't get them to work properly on their D3 and they couldn't tell me why. They think it has something to do with the steel BB.
Anyone know why?

My guess would be that they like little metal detectors and if they have too much metal around them they can't detect properly.
Cheers

As for the water I would wonder how much experience the doof-doof suppliers have in this area  .Time will tell but an externally mounted device like this is exposed to the elements anyway and the rear of the car actually attracts a lot of water and crap due to the negative pressure.
This metal thing is interesting. I experimented with the location before finally fixing them including the steel bar and there didn't seem to be a problem. If they are ultrasonic then what would cause the problem?
No instructions or directions with the unit.
The cynic in me thinks they are pushing you towards the camera...$$$$.
For $45 it might be worth the experiment.
I have a problem with reversing cameras as I find that reversing includes looking around.... front sides and rear so being "glued" to a front screen is limiting. I might be wrong.

BTW that is one of the reasons I put the speaker in the rear because naturally that is where your primary attention should be when you are reversing.

If you are looking for a reversing camera I can recommend this guy. I bought a touchscreen & camera setup a few weeks ago. I had a few probs with the screen drivers and he really bent over backwards to help me there.

He has the sensors for $45.00 posted too.

I was thinking some kind of interference.
I used to use an ultrasonic cleaner to clean stuff off metal. Maybe if you mount them on metal they clean the paint off. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
