View Full Version : Td5 fuel pumps.....

I've got an 03 td5 fender with fuel pump issues......
It's definitely the pump....as if I hit the tank the pump will kick in and run.....then stop again.....

My question is......what experiences have people had with aftermarket pumps.....?
The genuine ones are around the $600 mark.....supply only.....
And there are some on eBay starting at well below half that figure......

Is it worth buying a cheaper pump.....or are the genuine ones the only way to go.......?
I think the genuine ones are a VDO pump......

Any advice or info will be greatly appreciated........

I need to get this running again........

Cheers......and TIA........

I can't speak for defender , but I put an aftermarket pump in my D2 and it ran faultlessy for years and probably double the mileage the original OEM unit did.

I have no idea of the brand ...bought it from British Offroad.....they'll post one to you.

Apparently the pumps are the same......the only difference between the two is the sender unit for the fuel level......and the price......

I tried a cheapie  Lasted at the most 10.000ks:eek:
I then went to Roverlords and got the Genuine Vdo unit and peace of mind ;)
Unless you have the hatch cut in the rear floor in your Deefer i would not tempt fate with a cheapie as it`s a dead set pain in the ass to drain and remove your tank for a cheap POS F/PUMP;)

I asked myself the same question recently regarding a new fuel pump. I was fitting a new long range tank to my D2 TD5 and decided to replace the fuel pump while I was at it. There was nothing wrong with the one - it was just 13 years old at the time and I didn't know how much longer it had left in it.

I got a genuine pump from Roverlord. It cost a bit more than the cheaper eBay ones you can get but decided that the savings of a bargain now would disappear pretty quickly if it failed on me out in the middle of nowhere.

I don't have any actual experience with cheaper fuel pumps but they do go into the "not worth the risk / probably a false economy" category for me. Along with cheap tyres, cheap oils, cheap filters, cheap mechanics, etc.

IMO aftermarkets are a lottery, you can be lucky or not... depends on how you approach the issue, i'd not use other than VDO myself

Thanks......these are the sort of answers I was looking for......

Anyone else have any experiences with these pumps.....?
I'd like to hear it please.......

Also any little tricks I need to watch out for when I'm changing it....?

little trick , slide the seal right down before you insert the pump in the tank, it'll offer less resistance as you screw the cap down

We had a customer buy 2 pumps in a week!
On fitting the first he tried to stand on the first one to get the lock ring to lock. He ended up breaking the top connections. Once he found the correct way to fit it the second on went in easily, so if brute force is needed then you doing it wrong

check your earthing first before you purchase a new pump.

bashing the tank got it running again......do you think that'll be the earth.....?

also......how long should it take to replace the pump by dropping the tank....?
there is a tow bar installed......

Could be, have seen stranger earthing probs :D Removal and replacement? Depends on your skill set. and how stubborn components want to be, I would say a few hours at a leisurely pace, clean it all thoroughly, amazing how much dirt gets on the tank.

I have heard lots of stories of non VDO fuel pumps failing. If your 2003 fender is around 170-180,000 klm then it will be on its way out.( time & klm combined) I replaced my 1999 pump at around that klm with a non genuine & am down $200 for the experience..
Also, I would cut a panel rather than drop the tank 10 out of 10 times. there will be measurements here somewhere. Got an angle grinder & thin blades??

Sorry for the delay replaying, Tony, only just read your thread.
Yes, I fitted a VDO Siemens pump bought from the UK to my year 2000 TD5 Defender wagon. Much, much cheaper than a unit from Land Rover in Perth (although the exchange rate's not so good now).
I understand VDO is the OEM part. It certainly looked the same as the original and fitted a treat. It's done nearly 100,000km so far, touch wood.
Rather than drop the tank I fitted a Mulgo hatch, which needed to be located a bit differently to the instructions 'cause I have a long range tank. They're a great idea.
I carry the old pump as a spare on bush trips (it was still working fine but I changed it after 280,000km as preventative maintenance). The Mulgo hatch would make it easy to change. Also took the opportunity to clean the tank as much as possible before re-fitting.
This is a post on the subject from 2014...

Double check, but the part number was WFX000260G (G means OEM I understand). Hobson Industries in the UK are worth contacting. They convert Landies for army use and have a supply of almost-new bits they take off and sell.
Good luck, Dan
