New Email Scam AFP Subpoena

Hello All,

Looks like the latest wave of arsehole scumbags have been let loose. Today I received an email supposedly from the Australian Federal Police stating that I have been sent a Subpoena. Interestingly the sending email had no link to the AFP.

So I found the National Switchboard number for the AFP on (02) 6131 3000 and telephoned them and the first thing that the initial automated response says is... "If you have received an email which states you have been subpoenaed, it is a scam. Delete it immediately. Do not attempt to unsubscribe; do not reply, do not open any attachments and do not click on any links. Delete immediately".

Scamming lowlife scum :mad:

yep - we had this last week.


The Mrs (bless her) got a bit worried - but I pointed out if the AFP wanted to arrest you , would they call you via robot voice and warn you ? Plus - she couldn't think what either of us might have done that would cause them to be after us in the first place (double bless) - she did keep looking at me in a funny way though for the rest of the evening , but that's nothing all that unusual.

Sydney retiree issues warning over subpoena scam appearing to be from Australian Federal Police - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-03-17/warning-over-email-scam-claiming-to-be-afp-subpoena/7253884) when reporting these sorts of scams why do Police and others never advise the victim to physically disconnect from the internet when suspicion is first aroused?

If they did that they could run anti-malware while off-line or have the machine professionally repaired without the risk of the trojan sending the information to the criminals. One would think its a good safety procedure.

But it still didn't discuss disconnecting from the internet until the machine is confirmed safe if any link has been opened/downloaded etc.

Hello All,

Well a new crop of low-life scumbags have been sending out their vile poison again. This time it is a amateurish copy of the Australian Recoveries & Collections Pty Ltd (ARC) Logo and a rant about being a "Last Notice" of unpaid parking fines. Apparently the car park in question was located in Victoria

I did a separate email search to find out if such a company as ARC existed and buried within their site was the following message.

Accessed 1st of April 2016.... the message was generated yesterday so it is not an April Fool's Day prank... Anyway ... from ARC Mercantile Debt Recovery, Debt Collection, Debt Collectors, Debt Collection Agency & Purchasing Debt Collection Services Sydney, Australia (http://www.arcmercantile.com.au)

Email Disclaimer Notice:
As of 31 March 2016, it has been reported to Australian Recoveries & Collections Pty Ltd (ARC) that an email unauthorised by ARC/a scam email has been forwarded to many recipients requesting payment of outstanding monies due and payable to Parking Patrols (Vic) Pty Ltd.
This email refers to "FINAL NOTICE" with a hyperlink to http://arcmercantile.biz/downloadcentre/

This email hoax cross-references to ARC�s legal website. As with all scam emails, this link and information leads to a hoax website designed to cause damage to your computer. Do not click any links in such emails and do not click the hyperlink by mistake, print, copy, store, download or disseminate in anyway as it is not a link that is authorised or part of ARC�s website.

There is more however - just delete the message.
