Today I have been shopping for insurance - my insurance policy for my two Landrovers is due in about three weeks, and I am mad at my current insurer - about two months ago I got hit by a roo behind the rear wheel, and investigated a claim (in the end the repair cost was less than my excess, so I ended up not claiming.) and found a number of shortcomings, including the fact that they sent me to their preferred panelbeater who took three weeks and two further visits before he produced a quote, and the fact that they were going to take away my no claim bonus.

It has been an illuminating experience. The first company (APIA) I had to convince (with difficulty) that Landrovers actually existed before 1972 - then they had to input the model manually. Their quote was much higher than my existing insurance for both vehicles.
The second one (Suncorp/GIO) was unable to quote at all since Landrovers were not made before 1972, after I managed to convince them that they are not made by either Toyota or Nissan.
The third one (NRMA) was at least helpful, and they do not take my no claim bonus for roos, although their price is substantially higher. I am not very enthusiastic about them because of problems I had with a storm damage claim (my farm insurance is with them) last year. Not that they wouldn't pay, but they lost paperwork and clearly had no idea what I was talking about - I spent hours on the phone trying to sort it out. Also a few months ago my son who is insured with them had a roo damage claim, which was handled very well - except for the incorrect assemble of the door lock linkage that left him a few weeks later with an unopenable driver's door that had to be broken open.
A problem that does exist is none of them are prepared to insure my County for the amount my existing insurer has it listed for ($11,200) - generally they will only go to about $7000. Can you really buy a good Isuzu engined County for this?

Try Shannons insurance a series landy must at least be a classic by now.
www.shannons.com.au
Fotuanately with SGIO I now have lifetime no claim bonus protection so I will probablly stay with them for the fender but will probablly change the ducati.

Shannons is good for enthusiast cars or odd marques. They also have a cheaper option if you don't drive the car every day.

We are covered for an agreed value of over $15K for the Disco with all mods listed with Affinity Risk Partners. They were the only ones to offer a competitive premium with sensible conditions.

Not sure if they cover cars not registered in Vic, but it's worth a try.

Affinity seem fine to me at the moment in Vic, but... touch wood... I haven't tested them with a claim.

I'm with GIO They did up my excess for raised suspension but no issue with insuring the landy. I've been with them for quite a while. They also acnowledged my no claim bonus from the previous insurance company. The only trouble Ive had with them was a couple of years ago with my last car. Once I offered to cancell my house, contents plus 2 cars (Comprehensive and CTP) coverage with them they quickly came to the game. I told them the value of my landy and they accepted it without any issues.

Since my last post AAMI have refused to insure my 1970 Landrover (all I'm after for it is 3rd party property, for heavens sake!). They suggested Shannons, who cannot help me because it is registered as primary production and in daily use.
You would think that insurers would encourage people with older cars to have third party property insurance, wouldn't you?

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(\"George130\")</div><div class='quotemain'>I'm with GIO (snip)[/b][/quote]

Gearge,
I tried GIO this afternoon - they can't insure the 1970 Landrover because according to their computer Landrover did not make anything before 1972. This despite the fact that I already have Worker's Comp. with them.

Don't you just love insurance companies.

We're with GIO with both our vehicles and our houses. Never had a problem with claims or dealing with them in any way. A claim every year without affecting my no claim bonus. Agreed value ($15 000 on 1995 V8 Disco).
When I rang to inform them of suspension mods and rear draw system, no hassles, and even found I'm insured off road at no extra cost.

Suncorp is in fact the same company as the GIO who think Landrovers were not made before 1972!

I am afraid this exercise has certainly lowered my opinion of insurance companies. Not that it was very high to start with.

You could try TCIS in Adelaide. They are the brokers who handle the 4WD Association insurance. I think their no. is 1800 033 745 or email tcis@tcis.com.au

I moved from them to AAMI 'cos CGU (the new underwriter) wanted 3 times as much as AAMI. But in your case, it's still worth asking.

Oh, can I buy your County for the suggested $7K insurance value? You won't get a 4BD1 County for much less than twice that.

Try TCIS insurance, they are the ones who cover the 4wd association and its member clubs but you do have to be in a club. But I would ask them anyway even if u are not in a club they may be able to help as they know the 4wd market pretty well
I have my 89 rangie insured for 24.5 grand with access anywhere in aus including 200kms offshore including beaches and rivers. premium was 580 per year agreed value.

Brad

Not for sale, but if you know where I can get one for $7k I'll buy it myself - I know someone who will pay me a lot more!

Maybe we could entice a insurance company with the right policy and some knowledge of 4wds to advertise on the Aulro site?

I have recently moved to TCIS as Suncorp through my broker wouldn't insure some mods like lockers and bigger tyres etc. Anyway, TCIS will cover me for agreed value to include all mods anywhere in Australia, beaches, outback anywhere. Premium was similar to Suncorp and Suncorp didn't insure for any mods simply vehicle value. Happy with TCIS so far although you really see what an insurance co. is like when you have to make a claim.

Worth giving them a call though I would say.

I was with TCIS for about 5 years. I paid by the month and the actual company was CGU . I have a 92 Range Rover with several mods.About 3 years ago TCIS advised me that they had changed underwriters (to CGU!) who I was already with and the "new" insurance company no longer offered pay by the month, and the premium went up by about 50%.
Needless to say I was unimpressed.
I shopped around and found AAMI would give me agreed value, and value my accessories and mods. My agreed value is 19,000 and the premium $628 .

TCIS lost a LOT of business because of this , and even did a shop around all the clubs asking why we had all left!!!! Malcolm Jones who is a member of my cub and an insurance broker, and close to TCIS said that The insurance companies (NRMA notably)did not want the TCIS business because it was unprofitable due to the high number of claims!!
Go Figure!
I might try TCIS again this year based on your commebnts but I do not hold out hope they will be competitive.

I am also with TCIS. Their off road coverage policy seems more robust than a lot of other co.s. They did my 98 tdi disco for agreed value of (I think) $23000 and I have since had accessories approved - winch, bar, rear storage but for a slight premuim increase. The policy costs me about $620 I think. As others have said, the claim process will tell the story. Also, I am not a club member and they were happy to do business with me.
cheers

I have Suncorp insurance on my Ser2a landy Station wagon.
It is comprehensive insurance and I paid $87.76 in July. I also have another car with them.
The previous owner said that he had insurance with them and when I went to the office to check this , the staff checked the computer and said that I couldn't insure it because, as stated , it didn't exsist.
Then the manager came from the office and asked what was happening, then he said to go to another page on the computer and then he found my 1966 landy wagon.
So then I could insure it.
I asked , since it was a 4wd and I had an accident offroad would it be covered and he said yes. But luckly I haven't had to claim.
So, maybe you can check with Suncorp again.I have found them to be good.

Stories vary that much that I reckon a large part depends on who you deal with at each company. Alarm bells normally start ringing for me when phone operators are hesitant when asked specific questions about cover...if they don't know and there is any ambiguity, then this will only cause problems for me down the track and I walk away. The flip side is a company that makes no bones about what they do and don't cover, then at least I have a better idea of what I am signing up for. As mentioned before though, hard to tell which poilcy with which compnay is best until you actually have to claim. Insurance by it's very nature is about how to avoid paying out!!!

Bottom line, if you have asked the right questions and can refer to these points in your policy doc and can accept the premium and terms, go with whomever. My advice to anyone though when taking out insurance is think of it as if you are about to make a claim for a number of situations and not who is going to give me the cheapest quote.

Well said MickG, that was what I liked about the person I dealt with at GIO. I asked questions and was given a clear and concise answer.
But then I rang the NRMA for a tow when I did the TC in the disco, got a very positive and clear answer from the person I was speaking to, then when the driver showed up he told me it would cost around $100 morew than I was told on the phone.
I was very ****ed, and really should have insisted that he carry my vehicle for the price given by the NRMA, instead I told him to jam it up his rectum and fixed the vehicle in the carpark at work.
