Although this is a Waeco it could be done to any fridge that has fixed handles.
My 50ltr Waeco just fits between the back door and cargo barrier in a north-south configuration if the rear handle is removed, but now i have built a storage unit with slide the front handle now fouls the cb.
I made some brackets from alloy C channel and was going to bend up some 8mm rod for the handles, not easy to bend in a home vice so then i found some 8mm nylon air tube and some poly rope and them as per below.

The beauty is that they now hang down when not used and the brackets protrude less than 5mm past the thermal cover, i have plenty of spare material so if one breaks i can just make up another.

Looks good. Very neat. Had the same space issue and solved it using webbing, as in the pic.

Great idea also, i probably could have just looped the cord and used large washers without the brackets but it works ok.
Will need to attach a tie down point and find some springs that will suit to pull the fridge down without being too stiff.

Both handles were missing when I got my engel, my fix was sort of a combination of both your fixes, webbing, and a piece of PVC water pipe.
Easy to carry, saves space, and lashes down just fine.
