HI All,

So i'm thinking of getting a roof rack for my 110 and was wondering what others have, are you happy with it, anything to avoid etc?

Just now we have a couple of roof bars from Rhino for our D90. Was thinking of just "relocating" those but they're a bit limited so started to look at racks instead.

Any advise most welcomed!

Cheers
Shaun

Flat and low profile...I had a Wind Cheetah and thought it was excellent value for money.........

I'm not a fan of rails on top of the rack......means you have to lift things 4" higher and makes you too high for some car parks.

I fitted a Rhino Pioneer platform to my L322 today. They are low profile.

I fitted a K9 rack (http://www.dolium.com.au/retail_catalogue/cat/_K9_Rak.html) to a customer's Defender recently, it is low profile and appeared to be solidly built, and lots of accessories (http://www.dolium.com.au/retail_catalogue/cat/_K9_Accessories.html) available.

We have the full-length (on a 110) Wind-Cheetah (or Frontrunner) rack. Ours has rails around the front third, which I really like. You can pack stuff up there towards the front, and have the rail to help keep it in place. The rear two thirds are open, which is plenty of room to load stuff on.

I recently fixed a 2400 x 1200 sheet of 3mm chequerplate aluminium to the rack, now it's an excellent platform for putting things on, and very easy to walk around on. Have used it to put the camping chairs on as a nice high viewing deck. Also works very well as a tropical roof.

On my list, after GOEs.

Patriot and Hannibal are the top 2 leaders in Defender roof racks. Patriot are modular construction, So no welds cracking, recently copied by Frontrunner, but far superior in build and material quality, i.e. Aircraft grade aluminium and rack to chassis ladder so no drilling of the body work. Suppose it depends on how much you want to spend and what you are utilising it for.

I second Rijidij and the K9. Had mine on for a few months now. Full length (2.8m) Strong (welded not modular), light (45kgs i think), 6 pairs of legs. Cant beat it imo.

For a couple of reasons I'm thinking about getting a 90 length roof rack for the 110.

- Because I don't ever want to overload the roof
- Thinking about a solar panel on the angled front roof section at some point

My experience is with the Rhino Pioneer Platform. Couldn't fault it, relatively light too.

Had it on the 110 for 43,000km last year, all around Aus including a fair bit of corrugations, never gave a problem. Easy to mount an awning along the side.

Just to mention that I know the 4WD Super Centre has a rack with longer legs which will fit a 110. Costs about $400. I looked at it, and it seemed OK, but I haven't bought anything yet, for unrelated reasons.

Wow! Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I do like the K9.

A lot of you have gone for platforms which I'd also prefer.

Anyone feel the need for a ladder at the back with a platform? I have APT rockslides which make pretty solid steps to get on the roof but a bit narrow for lifting up larger items.

Thanks again,
Shaun

I also use the Front Runner Wind Cheetah (albeit on a 90) and I'm very happy with it. Being fairly lightweight was a big consideration for me. But I have the older welded, single-piece platform. I believe they are a bolt-together system nowadays - I don't know anything about these ones.

The platform on mine has been knocked about a bit with some stuff I've carried on the roof but it is still solid and performing well after 18 months (not really long-term yet).

Front Runner make millions of accessories for these, including a bottle opener! I bought some tie down rings thinking they'd be useful but I haven't used them once. Maybe I need the bottle opener instead.

As for a ladder, that would just encourage me to put more stuff up there!

The Defender has a built in bottle opener - the door striker plate ;)

My review!!

The rack is good quality, well built. - It is unlikely to break. (its designed to be slept on!)
Its very light, but you need 4 people to install it, unless you have an older defender and you dont care about scratches.

The slats run lengthwise, rather than across. This is supposed to reduce the noise. I dont know how it compares to others, but at 100 kph you hear the rack. I had some buffetting in the configuration I have shown in the pics. Since then, I pushed the rack back so that the front is about 20cm further back. This eliminated the buffeting, the rack is a lot less noisy. The rear overhangs, but it looks still good. It comes with a ladder which I installed using 2 rivnuts.
