Basic off rd trailer to put roof top tent on

Hi
Just starting to think about putting my roof top tent on a light and no frills trailer because my better half has a back problem and is not safe with the ladder to the roof.
What budget trailer options are worth considering? It just needs to be big enough to have the rtt above it and be weather proof for some stuff in it.
It needs to be off rd enough to get to some moderately difficult destinations in the vic alps area.
I am aware of the no. 5 trailers and they look good....but even a solid 6x4 would do I think? The lighter the better though as towing with a 300tdi disco.

take any stock 6x4 trailer,
do a spring over conversion or fit high arch springs

15 inch rims on the existing pattern and 29-30 inch rubber or something like 225x75xr15

instant light weight offroad trailer, should be able to have it all done for around 200KG with 550 available for the payload of your camper setup and kitchen +water.

buy a second hand trailer and you'll probably get change out of $1k all told including new springs and second hand HT rubber from a dealer/tyre shop thats friendly that handles new rubber swap overs for low KM new cars or has people like me that rotate out AT tyres at about the 30% usable life remaning mark

Mick, folded up it is close to 1.3 x 1.4m.
Initial thoughts are that I would just fit it to a couple of cross bars that would hold it maybe afoot above the top of the trailer.

Yep. A bit small to fit to the top of the trailer.
Mounting it on a frame slightly above is the way to go.

define weather proof?

the simplest way is a sail material top tarp to stretch over it with eyelets pressed in and some loops on the trailer to hold them down to with some elasticated cord. make it larger than the trailer and water will run off, pool noodles cut and buffered around the side will take care of your dust sealing.

for the rear doors foam rubber stripping and door seal takes care of the tailgate.

if you get some marine or ally plate to cover the top with to put the topper tent onto just strip cover the top of the trailer with foam tape. and let the weight compress it down.

I too want a good basic off road trailer, perhaps up to 1t ATM (so braked). I don't have space at home for a dedicated camper trailer that goes out a few times a year, and my current high-sided 7 x 4 light duty trailer does get plenty of use.

I'm no home engineer, so have been eyeing off pod trailers and also the Drifta option. I like them cos they seem well built and can potentially be added to in a modular fashion if we find ourselves doing more long remote trips. I don't know anyone with experience of them though. ? The Track trailers are pretty wild bits of engineering but insanely priced and seriously large. I do love the idea of that suspension.

In the end I bought an old Cub Kamperoo - 380kg Tare. This will be much more comfy for the back in question and should cope ok with some outback touring. Its the 'Transcontinetal Pack' which is just beefed up a bit in the suspension and chassis compared to the standard model.

Bought it in Ballarat. It towed ok back to Wodonga. Sat on about 105 on the flat comfortably and was able to hold 90+ ( in lock up third with EGTs never over 600) on the steeper/longer hills.

Hope it turns out to be enjoyably used.

Do you have a modified torque converter ? otherwise no 3rd lockup in a D1.

yes the box has the modified torque converter.
It is a good mod.
