View Full Version : Syntrax 80w-140 by mistake?

So I started doing a full driveline oil change in my Td5 yesterday and realised after doing both diffs that me in my haste while in Supercheap (idiot, should have gone to specsavers!) had bought two 1L bottles of Syntrax 80w-140 instead of the required 75w-90 (why can't the bottles be different colours?!).
I'm really not sure if one diff got all of one or the other or both diffs got a mixture of the two but how serious is it? Should I drain them both and replace or leave as is?
Cheers!:D

I don't think it's serious as we are talking diffs here.
If you were up here in the warmth I wouldn't be concerned at all.
In your lower temps it may be a little viscous when you start driving but once warm shouldn't matter.
Diff specialist may have other thoughts.

I wouldn't worry too much. You'll find that any inherent whine you may have had will be a bit reduced. That aside, I can't see it doing any damage.
I always use 85/140 in the Salisbury rear diff and have used it in the TC as well, without issue. I can't see the front diff being too bothered either.
50:50 chance you pumped in a blend anyway:D
The only part of the drivetrain that absolutely must have the right grade of oil is the gearbox. You don't want to run an 85/140 in that...

Thanks for the replies thats the type of advice I was after, its not cheap that stuff! I'll be paying closer attention next time though!
Yeah Ive always run Syntrans 75w-85 in the R380 in the Tdi which Ive found great, actually picking some up today for the Td5 as well, not sure whats in it now so will be interesting to see if there is any difference..
