View Full Version : Flashlube on a D2 V8 on LPG

I've been reading about the effectiveness of Flashlube and given its relative low cost I am going to install a vacuum feed bottle of the stuff.

Has anyone fitted this to a D2 V8 and if so where did you fit/drill the vacuum port on the intake?

I wouldn't bother. Land Rover V8's since time immemorial have been put on gas without flashlube and very few have suffered any damage as a result. A D2 V8 is far more likely to die of block failure than valve failure. Also the inlet manifold design doesn't suit flashlube as you'll get large puddles of it forming in the plenums under low power situations.

The LPG system is an order IMPCO carb not a direct injection so I start on petrol every time and I already run flashlube in the petrol which probably negates the need for any upper cylinder lube, I was thinking of running the bottle to inject flashlube all the time so i didn't have to add it to the petrol.

But yes given the intake shape, you're right, I'll skip this install.

The D2 is unleaded petrol, so why the need to add flash lube to the petrol?
Flash lube is to replace LEAD that was used in the leaded petrol days.
You are probably throwing money away for nothing.
As Bee-Utey said no need for it.

The direct injections also start on petrol every time, until the temp is sufficient for the gas system to kick in.

There are a considerable number of unleaded engines on the market that exhibit valve wear when run on LPG. Many shim adjusted OHC engines from Toyota in particular are quite bad for wear. Although lead has disappeared from retail petrol there are still anti wear agents added to the fuel. It's simply that Land Rover V8's have both good valve seats and hydraulic lifters to compensate for what little wear may occur. In Europe you could buy flashlube type systems that delivered lubricant accurately to each cylinder via a separate distribution manifold. The dosage would be controlled by the LPG injector opening time and a level sensor in the oil tank would stop the car running on gas when the lube ran low. None of that is necessary for a D2 engine. :)

Flashlube is now sold as lead replacement and LPG CNG protection, although from what I've been reading it's more about how you drive them that determines if you burn/damage any valves.

I add it to the petrol purely for extra lubrication on start up before switching to LPG.
