Well where does one start after spending far to long in the bush waiting......

OK
Yesterday i went out with 8 other guys from 4wdmonthly and we went up to Mt Dissapointment in Vic.
I conquered, i exceeded what i thought it would not do then all of a sudden...... No Clutch.... or more to the point, No hydrolics..
I pulled over and was luck enough we had just stopped on a Major Dirt road in the National Park.
We had a look and it was like the slave had given up the ghost... but we were later to find out no it was not....
I had full clutch in the drive line so i could drive out on the "Crash Box" Method.
I headed off and thanked the other blokes for a Great day.
so Dave and i headed off into the Distance to only get 1 km before it went bang and no Drive.... well just a little... it was just enought to kreep but that was it. So we pulled the Slave Cylinder out and the Fork moves and does not Seem to be punched thru.

Time to Call RACV Total Care... and get a Tow Truck.

I called RACV at about 3.30pm Sunday (yesterday) and was told I would be called back shortly….
4pm came and no phone call, so I called back. Sorry Sir we just located a recovery vehicle and it will be there in 2 Hours…..
6pm Called up to see what was going as we had no Grog and Dave had 2 Ciggy’s left.
Sorry Sir we cant find a recovery company that will come into that part of the National Park.
After convincing them that it was a 2wd Dirt road and the most major road in that park they called Wallan, Kinglake, Whittlesea, Broadford and Kilmore to be told NO, we wont go in there….
So a Towtruck was despatched from Dandenong and sent 2.5 hours to where we were and the nice fella picked us up and brought out Smokes and a 6 pack of Beam and Coke….. Now that is service….
Well we got back at about 10:30pm to Mitcham (Hardcore 4x4) and droped Camilla off… And we got to see the Swat team in action Ringwood east also….
Did you know they have 2 Defender’s as Armored personal carriers. I was impressed to see 8 blokes in full gear and guns jump out and start acting as thou they were in LA and jumping fences and running around like the world was about to end…..

So anyhow this week I’ll pull the box out of Camilla and plonk a new clutch in and do the gaskets and seals on the transfer, LT77 and rear main….
Last clutch was 80k ago, so its time to replace it even if it is ok…

So after all that make sure you yell at RACV when they tell you they cant get you for 5 hours….. it does not help, but makes you feel better…….

End of the day the Tow was covered under Total Care..... $161 per year...

Ooops!

Col will tell you that I've got a bit of a story to tell about broken clutches while off-roading....

When you put the 'box back in, make sure you modify the fork to make sure it won't punch through (make sure you use washers to re-inforce as just filling with weld can weaken too).

Thanks.
I've ordered the New Clutch and fork and little bits.
I will replace the fork even if it is ok, as they do break as we all know. And modify it before it goes in.

I'm lucky i was on a Major road when it happened, being on a 4wd Track would not have been fun....

I'll post some pix of the trip as soon as i can find some..

Nah it was a good day...
I pulled out a few Toyos' from Bogs and i got up 2 hills a guy with a Locked and lifted Hilux could not climb.....

One hill was a shocker.... 3 goes at it... and the side slope was shocking...
You had to hug the right wall to get the best line around this rock outcrop... i thought it would fall over....

Back to the Crutch...
At least it should last a while...
And i think the clutch and only a few others are the only things to stop you from driving when they let go....

I'll keep you informed on the damage...
Ohh i just orded $650 worth of Clutch and seals..... Now i have to fit the buggers...

As if parting with your hard earned isnt enough, you then have to do some work. I know how that feels. Matt

rest the box and transfer on a 44 gallon drum and lift the vehicle up off it......

it should make it a lot easier than trying to lift the box.....

Steve,

That pic on the angle looks like a rollover in the making - damn lucky I reckon not to put the Defender on it's side.

Why did you go that way, what was wrong with the left of the track? I cant really see the track in that photo. I agree with Chris, it looks damn close to going over. Matt

On the left about 5 more meters was a huge step that 38's would love to have a go at. if i got on the RH side of that i'd be right. and the 2nd run i did.... i was waiting for the bang of CV's accually......
