Hema or Memory Maps or...Ozi Explorer.. iOS or Android?

Hello all
I am looking at getting HEMA or Memory Maps or Oziexplorere on an iPad or Android. I've bought nothing so far. From what I've found out here, Mud Maps are out.
Memory maps has the whole country at 25k for $199.00 Hema charge US$79.00 Just for 2 mobile devices but I'm guessing that is per map. Am I right? or US$109 for 2 mobile and 2 PC's. But what is the scale? Yet you can buy the HEMA 4WD Ipad app for $99.00 with 1:250k maps and then buy additional maps for VIC @ $99.00 again, what scale.
It's doing my head in. Is it easy to transfer routes from PC to iPad?
I'm thinking it may be easier to buy paper maps.

Any ideas any one?

We use Memory Maps on my ipad mini, app cost $1.79. It covers all Australia and is simular to Hema maps. We use it extensively over Aus.

We always have paper maps on board to plan routes while traveling.

Hi,
First decision : ipad or Android.

If android, download the Hema app and have a play. It is quite comprehensive, and will suit a new user well.

Ozi (for android) is more versatile if you have the skills, it is still in beta release.

I use both, each has its own strengths.

I've downloaded the memory maps VIC 25k to my phone, it doesn't show all the vehicle tracks in the Brisbane Ranges. That is, if I am looking at that map.

I have memory map on android ... It's not easy to pre cache all the maps. However the 1:25k are the best detail maps that I have seen so far for the areas that I tend to go.
I do agree with bohica that some tracks are missing.. But I have not seen them on other maps either yet..

I use memory-map with the topo maps. Note that you used to be able to download all the maps with one click (and a hell of a wait!) but now you can only download a 'section'... This got me stuck on a recent trip in NZ when I changed plans due to weather and hit the edge of what I'd downloaded... with no reception to get any more. My bad for not having paper but I was on a motorbike so space is a premium.

I used to use Ozi on a small laptop but prefer memory map as it is faster and easier (and a lot cheaper).

My recommendation would to focus on the maps. IE if you want actual topo's or routable maps etc then choose some you like. Then the software you can load those maps on (that you can use and like etc), then the HW that you can run the software on.

flagg, good point but trouble is that some of us have the hardware for work or other purposes, then realise it would be nice to have maps/ apps to install on the hardware, so we're sort of constrained by the initial high purchase price of the hardware and need maps to match it.
I thought memory map and hema maps were the same item. If you visit memory map web site you can purchase hema maps that run on their system.

I hate to say this but you are about to enter a mine field.
I will admit that I am new to this as well and as a newbie this is what I have learned in the past 6months.

I have an android platform and have been playing with oziexplorer, memory map and androzic for off road. For on road I am playing with Navigator and Sygic. All are free versions as well because I am cheap and hate paying for something I may end up not using. Plus it lets you play with different programs and you learn the functions you like and / or require for your needs.
Advantage of Ozi explorer is their maps can be sourced from many sources and often can be had for free. I have also discovered that Ozi maps are compatible with other navigation platforms. Lots of navigation courses use Ozi - lots of support out there from users.

Their is also Custom Maps which allows you to create your own maps and their is also PDF maps which you can purchase individual maps for a couple of dollars each.

From my understanding Memory Map and Hema are the same - or use the same map format.

I see you are in VIC - and if most of your 4wdriving is in Victoria have look at Mapscape - but it is only available on Apple IOS. -

Most of the free source navigator programs use open street maps - and when looking at a few of the places that I frequent majority of the tracks are listed - except for some of the "goat" tracks. It would definitely be good enough to find your way out of the bush.

I've tried all of the android options listed here, but I'm currently using Orux maps, with a selection of maps pre-downloaded using MOBAC (Mobile Atlas Creator).

Somehow I've acquired the superseded NSW 25K oziexplorer maps (ozf2) but don't have the app - if anyone is interested :)
