Ok after some help picking a relatively quiet 255 55 19 tyre that isn't too exxy and has dirt road toughness... any recommendations from you all? No 'offroad' use just bitumen and gravel roads however towing a heavy van and load in the vehicle.

I've had these cheap and cheerfuls for the past 9 mths, bought from a local tyre fitter.

Great on road wet and dry. I've used them on the beach and just did a 1700km trip towing a hard floor camper to Lightning Ridge and back, which included about 100km of gravel (& stones) road at HW speed. I was impressed by them.

Have you had part-worn ATRs in heavy rain? The grooves on the outer bands are only half depth so the tyres become useless well before they should.

I have Pirelli Scorpion ATRs on my D2 and they're down to the wear markers.
Unless I'm being incredibly stupid in the wet at ludicrous speed, they're not a problem.

The 16" ATRs that I had on my D2 were different to the 19" ATRs that I had on my D4. I'm not the only person to shy away from the 19" ATRs after loss of traction on smooth roads in reasonably heavy rain.

I'm partial to Toyo or Continental having had great life and performance from them in 16" applications however as Graeme mentioned the tread patterns can be quite different. Just put off by the $$ at the moment 😮

Bridgestone D697? Not sure if they're available in that size.

I had contis before the cheapies. The tread depth were a 1+ mm above the wear markers. They were getting slippery.

I only had the Pirelli scorpions for about 20000kms and they were good. Obviously I didn't wear them down to he point you did Graeme.
They were 19"s on a disco 4.

I am running a cheap Nexen ATR at the moment and for the money think I paid about $260 a corner fitted and balanced with a wheel alignment I can't complain. Have been good in the wet and in the sand....

Not an AT - just a standard highway tyre but I'm on my second set of Nexen Roadians. Cheapest 20" tyre by a mile and a good all round performer. Got around 80KKM on the first set and done 1,000's of KM on the dirt - and even off-road tiptoing around carefully - never had an issue.

My local tyre shop sells Roadians might mosey on down... thanks for the info i always thought they were rubbish tyres so good to hear they can last! ☺ are they quiet also?

Never noticed any noise from them - the engine makes more noise I think. They are a budget tyre, but I have been surprised at how well they have worn - I wouldn't think they are a very high performance tyre, but the L322 isn't a high performance vehicle. :D

Never lost grip in the wet either, but again, the L322 isn't a sports car. For the money' they are well worth it IMO. They were under 1/2 the price of anything else in a 20" that I could find.

Certainly good enough to to get you motoring for a couple of years. :

Just worked out a more accurate tyre life of the last set. When we bought the car, the PO said the tyres were around 5,000KM old. Car had 137,000 when we bought it. We had the new set fitted 18 months ago with 205,000 on the clock (just checked the receipt) so just a tad shy of 80 - tyres were rotated twice in that time - and they were shagged when we bought the new ones. Still a decent run out of a cheap tyre with over 2.5 tonne of car sitting on them. :)

These are pretty good tyres for everyday use I think, as the "bulging sidewall" seems to give a fair amount of comfort for such a low profile tyre, yet still has enough rigidity when driving up a step like a gutter etc. I have the occasional dirt road a couple times a week and provides excellent performance in wet or dry. I have only done 20,000kms (I think??) on them so far though. I did test them out in some mud, and they self cleaned quite well in all but the most sticky clay.
Also, they are nice an quiet, but then apparently so are the MT version

What are these like in 255/60/r18? They were at the top of my list for my next tyre...

Cheers
